Home › Winter camping › Winter Camping Gear for Beginners: 5 Picks

The winter gear a beginner decides first is 5 items: sleeping bag, mat, tent, stove with gas canister, and heating. The order starts with bedding. The bag is the NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX (comfort −6℃) and the mat is the NEMO Eclipse All-Season (R-value 6.2). I chose one for each, assuming late autumn through winter with a low around −5℃.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

In winter gear, decide bedding before heating. Fire equipment is sometimes not allowed inside a tent under the manual's rules. How warm your night is gets decided by the bag's comfort temperature and the mat's R-value. The 2 items, the 630DX (comfort −6℃) and the Eclipse All-Season (R-value 6.2), come to JPY 92,400. So I spend the first part of a winter budget here.

Key points

  • A sleeping bag's comfort temperature should be at or below the lowest temperature. The 630DX is −6℃ comfort, about 1,190g, and JPY 67,100
  • For a mat, an R-value of 5 or higher is the winter guide. The Eclipse All-Season has an R-value of 6.2 and costs JPY 25,300
  • On days when the low drops below 10℃, switch the gas canister to a cold-weather one. The SOTO CB TOUGH works down to −5℃ with a regulator-equipped stove and a full canister

For winter camping gear, decide the bedding first

What decides a winter night is the sleeping bag's comfort temperature and the mat's R-value. The NANGA 630DX has a −6℃ comfort temperature, and the NEMO Eclipse All-Season an R-value of 6.2. These 2 items come to JPY 92,400 (67,100 + 25,300).

This article lines up 5 items in priority order for people staying for the first time in late autumn through winter, with a low around −5℃. I ranked by how directly each item works against the cold.

I looked at whether you can sleep, whether the cold is stopped, then fire

First I looked at whether you can sleep. Then the mat that stops the ground's chill. The tent and the fire equipment I decided after that.

When you sleep in a tent over half the year, winter's night length is the length of the cold. So I check the numbers on bedding before the heating gear.

What should a winter camping beginner get first?

In the order sleeping bag, mat, tent. For your first stay, start somewhere the low only reaches about 0℃, and don't push it on days when the forecast falls below −5℃. If the forecast is below freezing, you also need a plan that doesn't rely on a gas stove alone.

The difference from summer gear isn't only the bedding numbers. Gas canisters, the tent hem and how you handle fire all change. I compared winter sleeping bags in my winter sleeping bag picks and mats in Best Camping Mats for Beginners: 5 Picks.

1 Sleeping bag: one whose comfort temperature reaches the low

For a low around −5℃, the NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX. A new model that went on sale on Sep 11, 2026, with a comfort temperature of −6℃, limit −13℃, about 1,190g, and a packed size of about 5.1L. The shell is waterproof and breathable, ready for the condensation on a winter tent wall.

Buy by the limit temperature and you are 1 grade too cold. Read only the comfort temperature row. This is a weak point. JPY 67,100 is the biggest single expense in winter gear.

2 Mat: R-value 5 or higher in one mat

The mat stops the ground's chill. The NEMO Eclipse All-Season has an R-value of 6.2, is 10cm thick and weighs 460g, at JPY 4,081 per R-value point. In the makers' words, R-value 5.4 is "all-season" and 8.5 is "harsh winter". If you'll sleep on snow, aim for 7 or higher.

This is a weak point. It is held up by air, so a puncture lets it down. Carry a repair patch in the stuff sack. In freezing cold, avoid inflating it by mouth.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 24,035 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 30,881 between shops. Prices change daily.

3 Tent: a hem skirt to stop cold wind

The Coleman Touring Dome/SDX has a full skirt that closes the gap between the fly hem and the ground. Coleman explains that it keeps out cold air in winter. It is a solo tent, about 4.3kg, at JPY 25,300. It is a new model from September 2026.

This is a weak point. A skirt keeps out cold air, but it does not guarantee a stay on snow. Coleman's manual warns that fire inside a tent risks carbon monoxide poisoning. If you use it with family, look at a bigger tent after the SDX review.

4 Stove and gas canister: switch to a cold-weather canister below 10℃

With a low of 10℃ or higher, an ordinary CB canister; from 10℃ down to 0℃, a cold-weather canister. The SOTO Regulator Stove ST-310 (JPY 7,480) gives 2.9kW and a steady flame from 25℃ down to 5℃ outside. Paired with the CB TOUGH 220 (JPY 495), SOTO explains it works down to −5℃ with a regulator-equipped stove and a full canister.

This is a weak point. A canister gets colder as you use it, so start from a full one. If the forecast is below freezing, don't rely on gas alone. Use the canister made for each appliance, and never use it inside a tent or a car. I wrote about prices and when to use which in CB and OD canisters compared.

5 Heating: read the rules before using a kerosene stove

The Captain Stag × Corona SZ-32CS (dark green) gives 3.19kW of heating, holds 3.8L and burns about 12.3 hours. It weighs about 6.3kg and costs JPY 36,800. It uses no electricity, and the red-hot burner glows orange.

This is a weak point. There is no ignition device, so you need a separate lighter. Captain Stag's conditions for using it in a tent are vents top and bottom, a removable floor sheet, and 100cm or more from anything flammable. Use it only in a tent that meets the conditions, and as the manual says. A beginner can do well enough by getting through the cold with bedding first.

How the total grows as you add one item at a time

Adding in order from the sleeping bag at JPY 67,100, you reach JPY 92,400 with the mat, JPY 117,700 with the tent, JPY 125,675 with the burner and gas canister, and JPY 162,475 with the heater. Of the total for items 1 to 4, the sleeping bag and mat make up about 74% (92,400 ÷ 125,675).

If you can use a tent you already own, the 3 items of sleeping bag, mat, and burner with gas canister come to JPY 100,375. The heater at JPY 36,800 can wait until after you have stayed a night.

Who is it for?

Who it suits most: people staying for the first time in late autumn through winter, with a low around −5℃. Once the bag and mat are settled, most of a winter night is settled. Add other gear after you've stayed, as you find what's missing.

If you only camp from spring to autumn, this article's gear is too much. Choose from Best Sleeping Bags for Beginners: 5 Picks and the budget comes to less than half.
