The best sleeping bag for a beginner is the mont-bell Seamless Burrow Bag #3. Comfort temperature is 5℃, weight is 933g, and the price is JPY 16,500. The fill is synthetic, and the maker says you can wash it in a home washing machine. I ranked five bags on comfort temperature, weight and care, including the down Down Hugger 800 #3 and Coleman's Outdoor Comforter, which came out in September 2026.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Pick your first bag by whether its comfort temperature reaches the lowest night temperature, before you look at price. A sleeping bag is the one piece of gear you can't fix on a cold night. The Burrow Bag #3 has a 5℃ comfort temperature at JPY 16,500, JPY 13,000 less than the down #3 at the same 5℃, and you can wash it at home. So for a beginner who drives in, this is my first bag.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Compare the Burrow Bag #3 and the Down Hugger 800 #3, which share the same 5℃ comfort temperature: they weigh 933g and 568g, pack to 6.8L and 3.0L, and cost JPY 16,500 and JPY 29,500
  • Average daily lows are 6.3℃ in Karuizawa in October, 8.8℃ in Tokyo in November and 3.8℃ in Tokyo in December. A bag with a 5℃ comfort temperature won't reach Tokyo in December
  • The Coleman Outdoor Comforter has a comfort temperature of 8℃ or above. It is a 160cm-wide quilt that covers two people, but it can't go in a washing machine and has to be hand-washed

A sleeping bag is decided by whether its comfort temperature reaches the lowest temperature

Even among "5℃ sleeping bags", weight runs from 568g to 933g and price from JPY 29,500 to JPY 16,500. The mont-bell Burrow Bag #3 and Down Hugger 800 #3 both have a comfort temperature of 5℃.

For a beginner's first bag, choose by whether you stay warm at night, not by price or weight. My answer: if you drive in, the washable Burrow Bag #3. I ranked on comfort temperature, weight and care, and picked No. 1 from bags you can buy on Rakuten.

I looked at temperature, weight, then care

First I checked whether the comfort temperature is at or below the lowest temperature. Then weight and packed size, and last whether I can wash it at home.

A sleeping bag soaks up sweat and moisture every time you stay. When you sleep in a tent over half the year, ease of care weighs as much as the temperature number. A beginner will use one bag for a long time, so I always check whether it washes.

What temperature rating should a beginner choose?

The rule is one thing: choose a bag whose comfort temperature is at or below the lowest temperature at your campsite. Comfort temperature is the rating at which a person who feels the cold easily can sleep relaxed. It is a different number from the "usable down to 0℃" figure, which is the usable (limit) temperature. I wrote this up in my article on comfort and limit temperatures.

The Japan Meteorological Agency's normals (1991–2020) for average daily lows are 6.3℃ in Karuizawa in October, 8.8℃ in Tokyo in November and 3.8℃ in Tokyo in December. A bag with a 5℃ comfort temperature reaches Karuizawa in October and Tokyo in November, but not Tokyo in December. Normals smooth out a whole month, so some days are colder.

My line: for lowland camping in spring and autumn only, a comfort temperature around 8℃. If you'll stay in autumn highlands or from November on, 5℃ or lower.

Where people stumble: temperature, carrying, care

  • Temperature: the comfort temperature should be at or below the lowest temperature. Buy by the limit temperature and you are one grade too cold.
  • Carrying: if you drive in, the car takes the weight. If you walk, look at weight and packed size.
  • Care: the maker says the Burrow Bag can be washed in a home washing machine. The Coleman Outdoor Comforter can't go in a washing machine and has to be hand-washed.

Figures are from each official page, checked Oct 13–18, 2026. Prices include tax and are for the regular size. The Outdoor Comforter's price is the list price. Of the packed sizes, about 26.5L for the Outdoor Comforter and about 4.8L for the 480DX are my calculations treating the stuff sack as a cylinder.

What decided the order of the 5 bags

RankModelWhy it ranks here
1Burrow Bag #3Comfort 5℃ at JPY 16,500. JPY 13,000 cheaper than the down bag at the same temperature, and washable at home. But it weighs 933g and packs to 6.8L
2Down Hugger 800 #3568g and 3.0L, 365g lighter than the Burrow Bag. Costs JPY 29,500
3Outdoor ComforterA new quilt for 2 people at JPY 11,880. Comfort temperature 8℃ or above, about 2.3kg, and hand-wash only
4Disco 30880g at JPY 26,400. Comfort 4℃, enough for the low temperatures of spring through autumn
5480DXReaches a comfort temperature of 0℃. A new model from Sep 2026, and JPY 55,000 is a lot for a first 1 bag

No. 1 mont-bell Seamless Burrow Bag #3 | Washable synthetic, 5℃ comfort

I'll say it with some heat. Comfort temperature 5℃, 933g, JPY 16,500. Same temperature as the Down Hugger 800 #3, and JPY 13,000 cheaper. The fill is synthetic, and the maker says you can wash it in a home washing machine. A bag soaked by the end of summer can be washed at home and sent back out on your next trip.

This is a weak point. Its weight and packed size are about 1.6 times and about 2.3 times the down #3 (568g, 3.0L). Those are big numbers for gear you carry on foot. It suits a beginner who drives in and wants a first bag.

No. 2 mont-bell Seamless Down Hugger 800 #3 | The 568g standard

If you want light, this is it. Comfort 5℃, 568g, packed size 3.0L. The maker says the baffles that divide the down are gone and the down is held by threads stretched inside, which means fewer needle holes in the seams.

This is a weak point. JPY 29,500 is the second most expensive of the 5. If the lowest temperature may fall below 3℃, start from the #2, which is 200g heavier and JPY 7,500 more. I worked out the gap between #3 and #2 in my review on choosing a grade.

No. 3 Coleman Outdoor Comforter | A quilt on sale from September 2026

A new product announced in an Aug 19, 2026 news release as "on sale in stages from mid-September". It opens to about 200×160cm. Fold it in half and fasten it and it becomes a sleeping bag of about 200×80cm. Two people sharing get 80cm each (160 ÷ 2).

This is a weak point. Comfort temperature is 8℃ or above, and it can't go in a washing machine, so you hand-wash it. It isn't for nights when the low drops below 8℃. It is one piece of bedding for people who drive in during spring and autumn and want to sleep close to how they do at home. In my Outdoor Comforter review I also compare it with LOGOS's over-quilt.

No. 4 NEMO Disco 30 | 880g of down

It holds 320g of down, weighs 880g, and has a comfort temperature of 4℃ and a limit of −1℃. The price is JPY 26,400. Against the Disco 15 above (comfort −3℃, 1,230g, JPY 31,900), the gap is 350g and JPY 5,500, and the comfort temperature differs by 7℃. It is a bag for spring through autumn, when the low doesn't fall below 4℃.

No. 5 NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 480DX | A new model from September 2026

Released on Sep 11, 2026, this is a redesign after 8 years. Comfort 0℃, limit −8℃, about 870g, with 480g of down. The shell fabric is waterproof and breathable at a 20,394mm waterproof rating, ready for mornings when condensation dampens the outside of a bag.

This is a weak point. JPY 55,000 is a big number for a first 1 bag. It is fine to wait until you've decided to stay on nights below 0℃ before choosing it.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 49,500 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 55,000 between shops. Prices change daily.

Dividing out the price you pay for lightness

The Burrow Bag #3 and Down Hugger 800 #3, both comfort 5℃, differ by 365g and JPY 13,000. That works out to about JPY 35.6 for each gram saved (13,000 ÷ 365).

Ranked by price per gram, the Outdoor Comforter is about JPY 5.2 (11,880 ÷ 2,300), the Burrow Bag #3 about JPY 17.7, the Disco 30 JPY 30.0, the Down Hugger 800 #3 about JPY 51.9, and the 480DX about JPY 63.2. If you never carry it on foot, you can spend that lightness money on temperature and care instead.

Who is it for?

Who it suits most: people who drive in during spring and autumn and want to settle their first bag cheaply. The washable Burrow Bag #3 fits. If you plan to carry it on foot, the 568g Down Hugger 800 #3. For two people who want to sleep like at home in spring and autumn, the Outdoor Comforter is another way to go.

If you will also camp in winter, look at my winter sleeping bag picks first. The ground's chill is stopped by the mat, not the bag, so read the article on mat R-values too and the choice becomes clear.
