Home › Family camping › 10 two-room tents compared: space and weight for a family of four

My pick of 2-room tents for a family of four is the Coleman Tough Screen 2-Room Air/MDX+ (bedroom floor 300×250cm, about 20kg). To keep the price down, the DOD Kamaboko Tent 3M; for light weight and easy loading, the LOGOS neos PANEL Screen Double XL-BG. I chose among 10 tents by converting them to floor width per person, and price and weight per square meter of footprint.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

With 2-room tents, narrow the field by outer length before bedroom size. The bedroom and living area sit in one line, so even with the same 300×250cm bedroom floor, the total length can be 560cm or 610cm. On an 8×8m plot, once the length passes 6m, you have less than 1m front and back for guy lines. So I check the plot size at the campsite first, cut by length, and only then compare bedrooms.

Key points

  • The biggest bedroom floors are the two Colemans at 7.5㎡ (300×250cm). With four sleeping, that's 75cm each
  • Even at the same 19.5–20kg, packed length ranges from 69cm (DOD) to 74cm (Coleman). The longest is the Sabbatical Arnica Plus at 81cm
  • The ogawa Apollon and Facile were shown as awaiting restock on the official store (Oct 13, 2026). Snow Peak's Entry 2 Room Elfield main unit was not listed in the official store search

Same bedroom, but 50cm difference in total length

Coleman's Tough Screen 2-Room Air comes as the MDX+ and the LDX+. Both have a bedroom (inner) floor of about 300×250cm, yet the outer length is about 560cm versus about 610cm.

In a 2-room tent, the bedroom and living area sit in one line. In the bigger model, it's the living area that grows. The sleeping space can be the same.

How I chose

The first thing I looked at was outer length. I added 1m of margin front and back and calculated whether each fits an 8×8m plot. Next, I divided the bedroom floor's long side by four and checked whether it reaches 70cm per person.

Among what was left, I separated the picks by price per ㎡, frame material and floor waterproof rating. The two ogawa tents awaiting restock are left out of the picks.

As shown on each official page on Oct 13, 2026 (incl. tax). The Colemans are the two Tough Screen 2-Room Air tents. ogawa weights exclude accessories, and the Land Lock bedroom figure is the size of its dedicated mat. LOGOS is the regular price, and the Gilia Plus figure is for its 5-person inner tent.

I left out Snow Peak's Entry 2 Room Elfield because the main unit did not appear in the official store search.

Width per 1 person = long side of the floor ÷ 4. Per 1㎡ = official price or weight ÷ (outer length × width). Example: MDX+ is 109,780 ÷ 19.04㎡ = JPY 5,766. Outer dimensions are treated as a rectangle.

Price per ㎡ varies by as much as about 2.5 times.

Pick for a family of four: Coleman Tough Screen 2-Room Air/MDX+

Why it's the pick: roomy, yet short. Of the 4 tents that reach 75cm per person, only this and the Apollon are under 6m long. All three frame sections are aluminum alloy, while the LDX+, JPY 10,120 more, uses FRP for the bedroom and ridge poles. The cheaper model has the better frame material, an unusual reversal.

Things to watch: the waterproof rating on the living side. That fly is about 2,000mm, lower than the bedroom side's about 3,000mm. The official page notes it is "an item limited to some stores". I put the detailed numbers for this one tent in the MDX+ review.

Choose the LDX+ if: the bedroom floor is the same; what you gain is 50cm in length, 25cm in width and 1kg in weight. Families who often go to 10×10m plots should pick this one.

Budget pick: DOD Kamaboko Tent 3M

Why it's the pick: its official price is JPY 30,140 less than the MDX+. Its minimum floor waterproof rating is 5,000mm, the highest of the 10. Packed length is about 69cm, shorter than the MDX+'s 74cm, so it loads more easily.

Things to watch: its outer length is the longest of the 10, so the margins front and back get small on an 8×8m plot. The poles and ropes for propping up the canopy are sold separately.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 97,102 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 109,720 between shops. Prices change daily.

Light and easy-to-load pick: LOGOS neos PANEL Screen Double XL-BG

Why it's the pick: it's the lightest of the 10, 6.5kg lighter than the MDX+. It packs slim at about 23×70×23cm, and its price per ㎡ is also the lowest.

Things to watch: rain. The frame is fiberglass, and the fly's 1,600mm waterproof rating is the lowest of the 10. The bedroom is about 150cm high, so adults can't stand up inside. Who it suits: families loading a small car, and families who mostly camp a few times a year in summer.

The 3 tents I didn't pick, and who they suit

Snow Peak Land Lock: the biggest of the 10, and the only one wider than 4m. For people who can accept the weight and a size that's hard to fit on an 8×8m plot.

Snow Peak Land Nest Shelter: outer size 620×360×210cm, 16.5kg, JPY 87,780. Its 0.74kg per ㎡ is the lightest figure of the 10. I chose the picks from tents whose bedroom floor size could be compared in the table.

ogawa Apollon: its fabric is 210 denier, the thickest yarn of the 10. It's also the most expensive per ㎡, and ogawa's recommended pitching area is 10×10m or more.

With margins = outer length + 2m (1m front and back; the 1m is my own assumption). All 10 fit on a 10×10m plot. 8×8m is the plot size DOD's official page describes as common at Japanese campsites.

The 5 tents marked "over" fit within 8m if you cut the margins below 1m. For the Kamaboko Tent 3M, that's 0.8m front and back.

2026's new 2-room tents got lighter

Among this year's new releases, the inflatable LOGOS Air Magic PANEL Tunnel Dome XL (released Aug 27, JPY 165,000) is light at about 16.5kg, 8kg lighter than the Land Lock, the heaviest of the 10 (24.5 − 16.5). It sets up in about 7 minutes, a welcome tent for families who want to spend less time pitching.

For 2 adults and small children, the DOD Futaheya Rakuda Tent (JPY 44,000, about 9.5kg) is a way to go 10kg lighter than the Kamaboko Tent 3M.

For light weight, the 5.7kg 4-person Sabbatical Switchback, and for 50th-anniversary black, the 50 Limited Cocoon III are also new this year.

Who is it for?

It suits a family of four who drive and want the bedroom and living area in one tent. The pick, the Tough Screen 2-Room Air/MDX+, gives 75cm of floor width per person with four sleeping.

If you already have a dome tent and a tarp, you could start from tarp size by group size. For plots around 6×6m, the Facile, under 7m including margins, fits. Seven of the tents are over 16kg, so check how far you'll carry them too.

This part is a caveat. Each maker states weight differently, so I didn't rank on differences of around 1kg.

FAQ

How much bedroom space does a family of four need in a 2-room tent?

My guideline is 70cm or more per person. Dividing the floor's long side by four, of the 9 tents with published dimensions, the ones that fell short were the Facile and the LOGOS.

Will a 2-room tent fit an 8×8m campsite plot?

Leaving 1m of margin front and back, 5 of the 10 fit. On a 10×10m plot, all 10 fit.

How much does a 2-room tent weigh?

From about 13.5kg (LOGOS) to 24.5kg (Land Lock). The Land Lock splits the fabric and the frame into separate bags.
