About this site

Updated Oct 13, 2026

Camp Gear Note compares camping gear such as tents, sleeping bags, mats, stoves, fire pits and chairs using the numbers makers publish and Japanese store prices. I started it on Oct 13, 2026.

The writer, and what I write

I write numbers that can be checked in official documents, and the prices stores actually charge. Weight, packed size, floor area, waterproof rating, sleeping bag comfort temperature, mat R-value: things that read the same no matter who reads them.

I'm a camper who spends more than half the year camping around Japan. I'm a gear nerd who loves collecting camping gear, and nothing makes me happier than comparing official spec sheets.

Every article is built on the makers' official numbers and store prices. I don't just list them; I add numbers I recalculate myself, such as weight per floor area, width per person, or the R-value of two stacked mats. On top of that, I add how someone who spends a lot of nights outdoors reads them: which number matters in which situation.

I only describe how a piece of gear feels to use when I have actually used it, and I make that clear. I never write about gear I haven't used as if I had. The maker's own claims are written separately as "according to the maker".

The same writer also runs Golf Gear Lab, which compares golf clubs by the numbers, Race Gear Note for running gear, and Pickleball Gear Note.

Where the numbers come from

Numbers I could not confirm are marked "not confirmed" and never filled in.

About fire and gas

In articles on stoves, heaters, fire pits and gas canisters, I pass on the warnings published by makers and public agencies. Always read the product's instruction manual before use. Using fire in an enclosed space such as inside a tent can cause carbon monoxide poisoning or fire.
