The best fire pit for a beginner is the UNIFLAME Fire Grill. At about 2.7kg with a long side of about 43cm, 35cm firewood fits uncut with 8cm to spare. It comes with a grill and a distributed load capacity of about 20kg, and costs JPY 7,920. I lined up 5 fire pits on firewood length, weight and price, including the Fire Rail that went on sale in July 2026.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Choose a first fire pit by subtracting the firewood length from the pit's long side. With a pit that can't hold 35cm firewood, you have to cut the wood or look for shorter pieces. The Fire Grill is 43cm, with 8cm to spare, and weighs 2.7kg at JPY 7,920. At JPY 2.93 per gram, it was the cheapest of the 12 I lined up. So for a first fire pit, this is my pick.

Key points

  • The Fire Grill's long side is about 43cm, leaving 8cm to spare for 35cm firewood. JPY 2.93 per gram, and a distributed load capacity of about 20kg
  • The UNIFLAME Fire Rail, on sale Jul 11, 2026, is about 10cm high at JPY 13,200. Its packed volume is about 51% of the Fire Grill's
  • The Belmont TABI weighs about 478g and leaves 1cm to spare for 35cm firewood. At JPY 27.62 per gram, you pay about 9.4 times as much for the lightness

A fire pit comes down first to whether the firewood fits

The UNIFLAME Fire Grill is about 43×43cm and about 2.7kg. The Snow Peak Fire Pit L is 45.5×45.5cm and 5.5kg. They differ by only 2.5cm in size, yet by 2.8kg in weight.

The firewood standards on the Hokkaido government's website are 30cm and 35cm. I used the longer 35cm and worked out the leftover after subtracting it from each pit's long side. I ranked on firewood leftover, weight and price.

I looked at log length, weight, then price

First I subtracted 35cm from the long side. At 0cm or more, the wood fits uncut. Next I checked weight by whether you walk or drive, and last I divided by price per gram.

When you spend over half the year camping, fire time turns straight into time to boil water and grill meat. So I also look for a load capacity figure that says a pot can sit on it.

What should I look at when choosing a fire pit?

A beginner won't go wrong if they check these 3 things.

  • Firewood leftover: is the long side − 35cm zero or more? If negative, you have to cut the wood.
  • Weight and packed size: by car, even 2 to 3kg is fine to carry. On foot, 1kg or less.
  • Load capacity: for a pot or Dutch oven, choose a pit that lists one. The wording ("distributed", "static load") differs by company, so I only check whether a number exists.

What decided the order of the 5 lanterns

RankModelWhy it ranks here
1Fire GrillAt JPY 7,920, wide enough to leave room around 35cm firewood. Comes with a grill, and JPY 2.93 per gram is the lowest. But it packs 7cm thick
2Fire RailDouble heat shields and about 10cm high. A new July 2026 model. Distributed load capacity of about 10kg
3Fire DiscAbout 1.6kg with a load capacity of about 30kg. For people who put heavy pots on it
4Pyramid TAKIBI MAbout 2.2kg with a pot support rated for about 10kg. 35cm firewood just fits
5TABIAbout 478g, so you can carry it on foot. But JPY 27.62 per gram, and only 1cm of firewood to spare

No. 1 UNIFLAME Fire Grill | The standard that fits 35cm firewood

I'll say it with some heat. The long side is about 43cm, so 35cm firewood goes on uncut with 8cm to spare. It comes with a grill and a distributed load capacity of about 20kg. Even cooking with a pot is within what a first fire pit can do.

This is a weak point. It packs 7cm thick and won't fold flat. At about 2.7kg it is about half the weight of the similarly sized Snow Peak L (5.5kg), but it isn't a weight to walk with. It's a fire pit for people who drive in.

No. 2 UNIFLAME Fire Rail | A new pit about 10cm high

A low, low-style fire pit released on Jul 11, 2026. In use it is about 50×23×10cm high, and packed about 40×23×5.5cm. Two heat shields sit under the fire bed, and two pot supports come with it. Its packed volume is about 51% of the Fire Grill's (about 5,060cm³ versus about 9,844cm³).

This is a weak point. The distributed load capacity is about 10kg, half the Fire Grill's. If you'll put a heavy Dutch oven on it every time, choose a pit with more headroom. Even with the heat shields, it doesn't fully stop heat reaching the ground or lawn. In my Fire Rail review, I wrote about how it differs from other pits.

No. 3 Coleman Fire Disc | About 30kg load capacity

If you'll put a heavy pot on it, this is it. A load capacity of about 30kg is the biggest figure in the 12-pit comparison, and it fits Coleman's 8 to 12 inch Dutch ovens. At about 1.6kg it is 1.1kg lighter than the Fire Grill. 35cm firewood has 10cm to spare.

This is a weak point. At JPY 5.43 per gram, it doesn't match the Fire Grill. It packs into a disc 46cm in diameter and 8.5cm high.

Coleman Fire Disc

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 6,800 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 40,182 between shops. Prices change daily.

No. 4 LOGOS Pyramid TAKIBI M | A pyramid at about 2.2kg

About 2.2kg for JPY 9,900, JPY 4.50 per gram. The pot support is rated for about 10kg. It packs to 19.5×35×7cm and fits in a car's cargo area.

This is a weak point. The long side is 36cm, so 35cm firewood has just 1cm to spare. LOGOS says it can scorch lawn or a wood deck, so use it where scorching is fine.

LOGOS the Pyramid TAKIBI M

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 8,787 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 10,692 between shops. Prices change daily.

No. 5 Belmont TABI | About 478g to carry on foot

The whole set weighs about 478g and packs 1.5cm thick. It is the lightest and thinnest of the 12. It's a fire pit for people who carry by foot or bike.

This is a weak point. JPY 27.62 per gram is about 9.4 times the Fire Grill's (JPY 2.93). The firewood leftover is only 1cm too, so you have to take off the side plates.

Extra: ogawa COOKING FIRE PIT SOLO | On sale Oct 10, 2026

An iron fire pit that dropped from about 12.5kg in the old model to about 3kg for the body. JPY 25,300 including tax. In use it is 32×17.3×22.8cm high, so 35cm firewood is 3cm too long. It suits solo or duo campers who want to set a pot or kettle on the top plate. In my COOKING FIRE PIT SOLO review, I wrote about how it differs from the old model.

Price per centimeter of the long side, and the price of lightness

Price per centimeter of the long side is about JPY 184 for the Fire Grill (7,920 ÷ 43), about JPY 193 for the Fire Disc (8,690 ÷ 45), JPY 264 for the Fire Rail (13,200 ÷ 50), JPY 275 for the LOGOS (9,900 ÷ 36), and about JPY 367 for the TABI (13,200 ÷ 36).

The TABI is about 2.2kg lighter than the Fire Grill, but costs JPY 5,280 more (13,200 − 7,920). That is about JPY 2.4 per gram. If you never carry it on foot, spending that difference on log length makes the fire easier to run.

Fire safety

The Forestry Agency and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency say: don't leave the fire, and put it out completely. On dry or windy days, don't light a fire, and keep water ready for putting it out. The ground under the pit gets hot too, so follow the campground's rules. For protecting your hands when you move wood near the fire, I compared length and material in the fire gloves ranking.

Who is it for?

Who it suits most: beginners who drive in and want to try both a fire and cooking. The Fire Grill settles it. To sit low and gather around a small fire, the new Fire Rail. If you often walk in, the TABI is another way to go.

Read 12 fire pits compared too, which lines up weight and load capacity for 12 pits.

FAQ

What is the best fire pit for a beginner?

The UNIFLAME Fire Grill. About 2.7kg, with a long side of about 43cm, so 35cm firewood fits. It costs JPY 7,920.

Can I use a fire pit without cutting the firewood?

It depends on the pit. In this article, 35cm firewood fits the Fire Grill, Fire Rail, Fire Disc, Pyramid TAKIBI M and TABI, with 1 to 15cm to spare.

Can I compare fire pit load capacity between makers?

You can't compare them as they are. The wording differs ("distributed", "static load", "pot support guide"), so I only look at whether a number exists.

Can a fire pit with only 1cm to spare take 35cm firewood?

The 1cm margin is measured on the outside, so the inside of the fire bed is narrower. If you plan to burn 35cm logs in the Pyramid TAKIBI M or the TABI, choose them on the assumption that you will cut the wood a little shorter.
