For a light solo fire pit, Belmont's TABI (about 478g as a set); for a family that also cooks, Uniflame's Fire Grill (about 2.7kg, about 20kg distributed load capacity); and if you want to put logs on without cutting, Uniflame's Maki Grill II Large (about 68cm wide). I chose among 12, converting to weight, the gap against log length and price per gram.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

I calculate “width minus log length” before weight when buying a fire pit. The fire bed width cannot be changed by even 1cm after you buy it. The log standards on Hokkaido's official page are 30cm and 35cm, and putting a 35cm log on a 36cm-wide pit leaves only 1cm. So I first find out the log length sold at the campsite I am going to, and choose from pits with 5cm or more to spare.

Key points

  • Two pits 43 to 45.5cm square weigh about 2.7kg and 5.5kg. The 2.8kg difference comes from the 1.5mm plate thickness Snow Peak states officially
  • Price per gram is JPY 2.93 for Uniflame's Fire Grill and JPY 27.62 for Belmont's TABI. Lightness comes with a price about 9 times as high
  • Three pits cannot take a 35cm log within their width: Snow Peak's S, the Fire Grill solo and the Fire Disc Solo. Solo ones assume you cut logs or buy shorter ones

Fire pit weight differs by 2x at the same size

Uniflame's Fire Grill is about 43 × 43cm and about 2.7kg. Snow Peak's Takibi Fire Pit L is 45.5 × 45.5cm and 5.5kg. The size differs by only 2.5cm, yet the weight differs by 2.8kg (5.5 − 2.7).

Fire pit weight is decided not by size but by plate thickness and shape. So I lined up the official numbers for 12 pits and recalculated whether logs fit, weight and price.

How I chose

The first thing I did was subtract the log length from the pit's long side. The log standards on Hokkaido's official site are 30cm and 35cm. Subtracting the longer 35cm, I split the pits into those where logs fit uncut and those that assume cutting.

Next I looked at weight by whether you carry it on foot or by car. If you put a pot on it, only pits with an official load capacity. Last I decided by price per gram.

As shown on each official page on Oct 13, 2026; prices include tax. Clearance is the long side of the size in use − 35cm (diameter for round pits). These are outer dimensions, so the inside of the fire bed is narrower. The TABI is a set with the grill extension, the Fire Disc Solo includes the grill, and mont-bell is the body weight.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 7,120 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 12,540 between shops. Prices change daily.

Six pits had 5cm or more of clearance with a 35cm log. The three for solo do not fit within the width, so they assume you cut logs or buy shorter ones.

For price per gram, the Fire Grill's JPY 2.93 is the lowest and the TABI's JPY 27.62 the highest. That is about 9.4x, with a price put on lightness itself. Snow Peak's plate is 1.5mm thick, which is where the 2.8kg gap at the top comes from.

Light solo fire pit: my pick is the Belmont TABI

About 478g as a whole set, with a packed thickness of 1.5cm. It is first among the 12 in both weight and thinness, and its long side is still more than 6cm wider than the other three for solo.

This part is a weak point: the clearance with a 35cm log is only 1cm, and it assumes you use it with the side plates removed. It is a unit for people who carry on foot or by bicycle.

Belmont TABI fire pit

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 10,999 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 15,728 between shops. Prices change daily.

Among new products, the ogawa COOKING FIRE PIT SOLO (JPY 25,300 incl. tax), released on Oct 10, 2026, got lighter, from about 12.5kg in the old model to about 3kg. It is a fire pit you can cook on, brought down to a weight one person can carry.

For solo trips by car, the Fire Disc Solo. It is about 900g with the grill, 422g more than the TABI, at less than half the price.

A family that also cooks: my pick is the Uniflame Fire Grill

The deciding point is JPY 2.93 per gram. It comes with a grill, the load capacity for putting a pot on is clear, and the division came out the lowest of the 12. The weight is about half of Snow Peak's L, which is about the same size.

Watch the packed thickness of 7cm, about 2.2 times the L's. It does not fold flat. For families who both grill and make hot pot, this settles it.

If grilling is the main use, compare grate area in the BBQ grill ranking.

If a Dutch oven is the star, the Fire Disc: A load capacity of about 30kg is the largest of the 12, and it supports the company's own 8 to 12 inch Dutch ovens. It is 1.1kg lighter than the Fire Grill. It does not reach the Fire Grill on price per gram, but for people who put heavy pots on it, this is the one.

Coleman Fire Disc

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 7,445 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 40,182 between shops. Prices change daily.

Captain Stag's Hexa: 12.5cm of clearance with a 35cm log, and the second-lowest price per gram of the 12. It suits people who mainly grill and want to put logs on as is. For heavy pots, choose the Fire Grill with its distributed load capacity of about 20kg. For a campfire close to the ground, there is also the new Uniflame Fire Rail, about 10cm high.

Logs without cutting: my pick is the Uniflame Maki Grill II Large

It is about 68cm wide, so even with a 40cm log there is 28cm to spare. With that much room, you can push the logs to one side and still have a pot's width left. It is an escape that pits with a width about the same as the log do not have.

Watch the weight and packed size: it is the heaviest of the 12, with a long side of 65cm. I recommend it to people who can measure the width of their car trunk first.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 20,350 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 30,088 between shops. Prices change daily.

Snow Peak's L: Among S, M and L, it is the only size that is not picky about logs. It keeps the plate thickness of 1.5mm, and the packed thickness fits in 3.2cm. The weight of 5.5kg is a mixed point, about 3.1 times the S. It suits people who carry one long-term pit by car.

Open fires, the ground, and handling fire

The ground under the pit gets hot too. LOGOS writes to use it where scorching is acceptable, since it may scorch lawn or a wooden deck. For protecting your hands as you move logs near the fire, I compare length and material in the campfire glove ranking.

What the Forestry Agency and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency list is not leaving the fire and putting it out completely. Do not use fire on dry or windy days, and have water ready for putting it out.

Who is it for?

It suits people who take their own fire pit and want to choose with log length and cooking in mind. For solo on foot, the TABI (about 478g); for a family that also cooks, the Fire Grill; and if you want to put logs on uncut, the Maki Grill II Large.

If you camp once or twice a year at a campsite that lends fire pits, borrowing one to try first is also an option. If you only watch the fire, you can choose by weight and width alone.

FAQ

Can I use a solo fire pit without cutting logs?

It depends on the pit. The three where a 35cm log does not fit the width are Snow Peak's S, the Fire Grill solo and the Fire Disc Solo.

Which Snow Peak fire pit is best: S, M or L?

L if you do not want to cut logs. The clearance with a 35cm log was −6.5cm for the S, 0cm for the M and +10.5cm for the L.

What is different about a secondary-combustion fire pit?

It is a mechanism that burns the leftover gas a second time. In mont-bell's explanation, air warmed by a double wall blows out from above, so the wall adds weight.

Can I compare fire pit load capacity between makers?

Not as is. “Distributed,” “static load” and “pot support guide” are written differently, so I only looked at whether a number exists.
