The best LED lantern for a beginner is the GENTOS EX-350H. It gives 1400 lumens for about 7 hours, also runs on 3 D-size alkaline batteries, and is waterproof to an IP68 standard at 2m. The price is JPY 14,080. I lined up 5 lanterns by the pairing of brightness and burn time, including 2 LOGOS Yaden lanterns that came out in 2026.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Choose a lantern by "how many hours at that brightness", not the big number on the box. The EX-350H gives 1400 lumens for about 7 hours. But the burn time is the time until brightness drops to 10% of the start, so I read the 7-hour average as around 500 lumens. Even so, this is the one that can light the whole campsite. So for a first main lantern, it's my pick.
Key points
- The EX-350H has a brightness × time of 9,800 (1400 × 7), about 3.9 times the 2,500 (250 × 10) of the Coleman Hanging E-Light
- The LOGOS Yaden Thunder Lantern, on sale Aug 27, 2026, costs JPY 6,600. It gives a warm light and can run about 44 hours when dimmed
- The brightness figure is the starting value. GENTOS's burn time is the time until brightness falls to 10% of the start

Read lumens and burn time as a pair
The GENTOS EX-350H gives 1400 lumens for about 7 hours. The Coleman Rechargeable LED Lantern 800 gives about 800 lumens for about 2.5 hours. Their battery capacities differ by only 1.14 times, yet brightness × time is 9,800 versus 2,000, a gap of 4.9 times.
The reason is how burn time is measured. According to GENTOS's blog, the burn time under the US standard ANSI FL1 is the time until brightness falls to 10% of the start. "1400 lumens for 7 hours" still holds if the light has dropped to 140 lumens by hour 7.
I looked at brightness, run time, then where it goes
I don't read the biggest number on the box. I looked at the "how many hours at that brightness" column, and counted whether it covers the 4 to 5 hours from dinner to bedtime.
Then I split them by where you use them: the main light for the whole site, a secondary light on the table, and one inside the tent. When you spend over half the year in a tent, a lantern is something you switch on every night.
How many lumens does a camping lantern need?
As a guide, 430 to 1400 lumens for the main light, and 60 to 250 lumens for the table or inside the tent. Then check in the burn-time column whether it lasts 4 to 5 hours at that brightness.
A beginner's first lantern is the main one. For a secondary light, add a headlamp or a small hanging lantern. The article comparing 12 lanterns is 12 LED lanterns compared.
The 3 common stumbling points with lanterns
- Brightness × time: not just the starting brightness, but how many hours it lasts.
- Power: for multi-night trips, one that also runs on dry-cell batteries; for 1 to 2 nights, a light rechargeable.
- Waterproofing: IPX4 means it withstands splashing water for 10 minutes. If you'll hang it outside on rainy nights, pick a higher rating.

What decided the order of the 5 lanterns
| Rank | Model | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | EX-350H | Brightness × time of 9,800, the highest of the 5 lanterns. It can light the whole site. But JPY 14,080 and about 680g |
| 2 | Thunder Lantern | Dim the warm light for about 44 hours. A new August 2026 lantern that stands on the table. Pricey for its brightness |
| 3 | Hang Gauge Lantern | About 160g, and the light switches among 3 colors. A new lantern; at most about 3 hours of light |
| 4 | Hanging E-Light | 250 lumens for about 10 hours at JPY 3,960. Charging takes about 10 hours |
| 5 | Moji R+ | At 78g, 100 hours on the low 10 lumens. The battery is built in, so it doesn't take dry cells |
No. 1 GENTOS EX-350H | This is the main lantern
I'll say it with some heat. Among rechargeables that last over 4 hours at 500 lumens or more, it has the highest waterproof rating of the group. With IP68-rated 2m waterproofing, you can leave it hanging outside on a rainy night. It also lights on 3 D-size alkaline batteries, so you're covered on multi-night trips if the charge runs out.
This is a weak point. The 1400 lumens is the starting figure on white at full power, and the price is the highest of the 5. It also weighs about 680g, which is heavy for gear you carry on foot.
No. 2 LOGOS Yaden Thunder Lantern | A new lantern that burns warm light for a long time
Released on Aug 27, 2026 as a 2027 model. The light is warm only, and a dial dims it smoothly. Burn time is about 6 to 44 hours, with an IPX4 rating. It takes no dry-cell batteries and charges over USB Type-C.
This is a weak point. The price per lumen is about JPY 52 (6,600 ÷ 126), 2.8 times the Hang Gauge Lantern's JPY 19. For cooking time, when you want white light on your hands, add another light. In my Thunder Lantern review I compared it with the other LOGOS lanterns.

No. 3 LOGOS Yaden Hang Gauge Lantern | A 160g lantern to hang
A new lantern released on Sep 24, 2026, at JPY 3,980. One unit (1) switches among a filament-style warm light, a white and warm light on top, and a red light. At 160g, it's no burden hung from a loop on the tent ceiling.
This is a weak point. The "gauge" is not a battery gauge, and there is no charge indicator. You can't light it while it charges, so charge it during the day. I wrote it up in full in my Hang Gauge Lantern review.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 3,980 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily.
No. 4 Coleman Hanging E-Light | 250 lumens for JPY 3,960
Strong on the numbers. 250 lumens for about 10 hours at about 130g and JPY 3,960. On low it gives 30 lumens for about 40 hours. It suits a beginner's secondary 1 lantern.
This is a weak point. Charging takes about 10 hours (5V/500mA).
Coleman Hanging E-Light
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 2,880 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 7,841 between shops. Prices change daily.
No. 5 Black Diamond Moji R+ | The lantern for inside the tent
The deciding point is how long low lasts. Low drops to 10 lumens and runs 100 hours at that brightness. At 5 hours a night, that is 20 nights (100 ÷ 5). A double hook and a magnet are built in, so it hangs straight from the tent ceiling.
This is a weak point. Its waterproofing is IPX4, and the battery is built in, so it can't use dry cells.
Black Diamond Moji R+
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 7,469 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily.
Re-dividing by price per lumen-hour
Call brightness × time "lumen-hours": the EX-350H has 9,800 and the Hanging E-Light has 2,500. Dividing price by lumen-hours gives about JPY 1.44 for the EX-350H (14,080 ÷ 9,800) and about JPY 1.58 for the E-Light (3,960 ÷ 2,500).
The other three: about JPY 6.23 for the Hang Gauge Lantern, JPY 7.70 for the Moji R+, and about JPY 8.73 for the Thunder Lantern. I used the short end of the run times in the table. The two with the smallest numbers give the most light for the longest time at the same price.
Who is it for?
Who it suits most: people who want to settle the main light first. Light the whole site with the EX-350H and add the Hanging E-Light or Thunder Lantern for the table. For solo camping, a headlamp and one small lantern are enough some days.
