The best solo tent for a beginner is the Coleman Touring Dome/SDX, which came out in September 2026. About 4.3kg, a 2.52m² floor, and JPY 25,300. It has pole pockets that make it easy to pitch alone, and a full skirt so you can pitch it on cold nights. I lined up 5 tents, including Snow Peak and NEMO, by how you carry them and the price per m² of floor.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Choose a first solo tent by "how will I carry it" before price. By car or motorbike, weight isn't a concern, and you can choose by floor space and season range. The SDX is only about 300g heavier and JPY 3,520 more than the standard ST, and adds a full skirt and mesh on both sides. So for a beginner who drives in, this is my first tent.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The SDX and ST have the same dimensions; the difference is about 300g and JPY 3,520. It adds a full skirt and mesh on both sides, so you can pitch it not just in spring and autumn but on the edge of winter and in midsummer
  • For carrying on foot or by bike, the Snow Peak Fal Pro.air 2. 1,710g with a 2.73m² floor, and JPY 14,465 per 1m² of floor
  • Official "weights" come as total weight and minimum weight, and for the mont-bell Moonlight Tent 1 they differ by 220g. Check which one the weight in a shop listing is

Solo tents run from 822g to about 4.3kg

The NEMO Hornet Osmo 1P has a minimum weight of 822g, and the Coleman Touring Dome/SDX about 4.3kg. Both are for one person, and they differ by about 5 times. You can't say the lighter one is the better tent. Floor space, vestibule and what the weight includes differ by maker.

A beginner's first tent is decided by whether you travel on foot or by bike, or by car. I ranked on how you carry it, price per m² of floor and ease of pitching.

I divided weight and floor area to compare them

First I divided weight by floor area. Then I divided price by floor area too. When you sleep in a tent over half the year, a difference in floor space is a difference in where your gear goes.

For No. 1, I chose from tents you can buy on Rakuten the one that is easy to pitch and covers a wide range of seasons.

Should a beginner choose a 1-person or 2-person solo tent?

If you carry it on your back, choose a 1-person tent whose vestibule depth is stated. If you want your gear inside or you drive in, a floor width of 120cm or more is easier. The SDX and ST inner is 210×120cm, which gives 60cm each for two people (120 ÷ 2).

A finer weight comparison of 12 tents is in 12 solo tents compared by weight. For larger family tents, see Best Tents for Beginners: 5 Picks.

The 3 common stumbling points with solo tents

  • How you carry it: for foot or bike, 2kg or less. By car, around 4kg is fine to carry.
  • Pitching: with pole pockets you thread the poles through sleeves to stand it up, so it's easy to build alone.
  • Season: the skirt at the hem of the fly stops cold wind in winter. A skirt does not guarantee a stay on snow.

What decided the order of the 5 tents

RankModelWhy it ranks here
1Touring Dome/SDXThe ST plus 300g and JPY 3,520, for a full skirt and mesh on both sides. A new Sep 2026 model. For car or motorbike
2Touring Dome/STJPY 21,780, the cheapest of the 5 tents. Enough if you only pitch in spring and autumn
3Fal Pro.air 21,710g with a 2.73m² floor. Carry it on foot or by bike. But JPY 39,490
4Stacy ST-IIA vestibule 110cm deep. The recommended pitching area is 6×6m or larger
5Hornet Osmo 1P822g, the lightest. But JPY 68,200 and a 1.9m² floor

No. 1 Coleman Touring Dome/SDX | A new tent you can pitch on cold nights

I'll say it with some heat. It differs from the ST by not even 1cm in dimensions, and the size in use, the inner floor and the stuff sack are all the same. The difference is about 300g and JPY 3,520, and what was added is a full skirt and mesh on both sides. Coleman explains that the full skirt closes the gap between the fly hem and the ground, keeping out cold air in winter and insects in summer.

This is a weak point. At 1,706g per m² of floor, it is more than twice a tent made for backpacking, and a weight you carry by car or motorbike. It has pole pockets and is easy to pitch alone, but a hammer isn't included. Don't use fire inside the tent. In my SDX review, I worked out the gap with the ST.

No. 2 Coleman Touring Dome/ST | Start for JPY 21,780

If you want to start cheap, this is it. About 4kg, packed 19×49cm in diameter and length. The waterproof rating is about 1,500mm for both fly and floor. If you only pitch in spring and autumn, you don't pay the 300g and JPY 3,520 that the SDX adds.

This is a weak point. The floor fabric is about 1,500mm, the same as the fly, so choose it on the assumption that you'll lay a groundsheet underneath.

No. 3 Snow Peak Fal Pro.air 2 | If you carry it on foot

The deciding point is JPY 14,465 per 1m² of floor. It is the lowest among lightweight tents under 2kg, and the floor is a wide 2.73m². You can sleep with your gear inside.

This is a weak point. At 1,710g, it is the heaviest of the lightweight tents, and JPY 39,490 is about 1.8 times the ST. It's a 1-tent pick for people who carry on foot or by bike.

Snow Peak Fal Pro.air 2

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 38,000 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 86,850 between shops. Prices change daily.

No. 4 ogawa Stacy ST-II | A deep vestibule for the car

A vestibule 110cm deep is the deepest among those with an official figure. The floor is 3.30m², 0.78m² bigger than the Touring Dome/ST, yet the weight is nearly the same at 3.9kg. It suits people who want room for shoes and wet gear.

This is a weak point. The official category is 2 to 3 people, and the recommended pitching area is 6×6m or larger. I recommend it to people who can check the plot size first.

ogawa Stacy ST-II

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 50,744 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily.

No. 5 NEMO Hornet Osmo 1P | A weight of 822g

The minimum weight of 822g is 888g lighter than the Fal Pro.air 2. The price gap is JPY 28,710, so each gram saved costs about JPY 32 (28,710 ÷ 888). People who carry it up mountains pay that price for the lightness.

This is a weak point. It is expensive for a first camping trip, and the floor is on the narrow side at 1.9m².

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 68,200 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 81,248 between shops. Prices change daily.

The price of each gram saved climbs sharply as you go lighter

Going from the Touring Dome/ST (about 4kg, JPY 21,780) to the Fal Pro.air 2 (1,710g, JPY 39,490) saves about 2.3kg for JPY 17,710 more. That is about JPY 7.7 per gram saved (17,710 ÷ 2,290).

Going from the Fal Pro.air 2 to the Hornet Osmo 1P costs about JPY 32 per gram. Both are "going lighter", yet the price of each gram for someone on foot jumps to more than 4 times as much. If you carry the tent by car or motorbike, there is no reason to pay that difference.

Who is it for?

Who it suits most: a beginner on their own who goes by car or motorbike. The ST for spring and autumn; the SDX if you'll also pitch on cold November or March nights and in midsummer. If you'll carry it on foot some days, the Fal Pro.air 2.

If you haven't stayed a single night yet, trying one at a campground that rents gear is another way. To settle sleeping bag, mat and the rest of your solo gear together, see Solo Camping Starter Set: 8 Essentials.
