The best tent for beginners is the DOD Kinoko Tent 2. There are no poles to thread: it opens like an umbrella and extends 6 legs. It sleeps 4 adults at 85cm each, costs JPY 55,000 incl. tax and weighs about 14kg. I ranked 5 tents, including 2026 releases, with the classic Snow Peak Amenity Dome M and a LOGOS air tent that pitches in 5 minutes, on setup effort, floor space and rain protection.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
For a first tent, ask "can one person pitch it?" before you look at price. If setup is a chore, camping becomes a chore. The Kinoko Tent 2 has no pole threading and opens like an umbrella, so there are fewer steps. That's why I put it first for a beginner's first tent.
Key points
- The #1 Kinoko Tent 2 gives 4 adults 85cm each (340 ÷ 4). The LOGOS air tent that pitches in 5 minutes gives 4 people 52.5cm each (210 ÷ 4), so plan on 2 adults and 2 children
- Waterproof rating shows how well a tent holds out rain: the Kinoko Tent 2's fly is 2,000mm, the Amenity Dome M 1,800mm and the Touring Dome/ST about 1,500mm
- Weight per person: the Amenity Dome M and LOGOS are 2kg (8 ÷ 4), the Kinoko Tent 2 is 3.5kg (14 ÷ 4) and the Tough Speed Dome is 4.25kg (17 ÷ 4)

The numbers a beginner checks first are setup effort and floor space per person
Even among 4-person tents, floor width per person runs from 85cm to 52.5cm. The DOD Kinoko Tent 2 gives 4 adults 85cm each (340 ÷ 4), while the LOGOS air tent gives 52.5cm each even as a 4-person tent (210 ÷ 4).
A first tent is confusing because there are so many types. My answer: start with the one that is easiest to pitch. I ranked 5 tents you can buy on Rakuten on three things: setup effort, floor space and rain protection.
How I chose
First I looked at whether one person can pitch it. Then floor width divided by the number of people. Last, rain protection.
When you sleep in a tent more than half the year, you pitch it dozens of times a year. A beginner gets tired on the first try, and the second try gets pushed back. So I look at setup effort before price.
Three ways to avoid a bad first tent
- Setup: does it have poles (the bars of the frame) to thread? Tents split into three types: ones that open like an umbrella, ones you inflate, and ones with poles.
- Space: divide the long side of the floor by the number of people. With 70cm or more per person, you are less likely to bump shoulders.
- Rain: the waterproof rating is the height of water, in mm, that the fabric can hold out. The fly is the outer roof fabric and the floor is the fabric underneath.
As a budget guide, there are three tiers: JPY 20,000s for up to 2 people, JPY 50,000s for a family of 4, and from the JPY 70,000s for air tents or 2-room tents.

Why this order
| Rank | Model | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kinoko Tent 2 | No poles to thread and 85cm each for 4 adults. But the fly is 2,000mm and the groundsheet is sold separately |
| 2 | Amenity Dome M | 2kg per person at 8kg. Frame ends are color-coded and 18 pegs are included. Waterproof rating 1,800mm |
| 3 | W-Cross Dome M | Up in about 5 minutes on air, but 4 people sleeping in it get only 52.5cm each |
| 4 | Touring Dome/ST | At JPY 21,780, the cheapest of the 5 tents. But it sleeps 1 to 2 people, and the waterproof rating is only about 1,500mm |
| 5 | Tough Speed Dome | Bedroom and living area in 1 tent. At about 17kg and JPY 86,900, though, it is a big step for a 1st tent |
#1 DOD Kinoko Tent 2 | Opens Like an Umbrella, 4 Adults
I'll say it with some heat. There are no poles to thread. It opens like an umbrella and extends 6 legs. The inner is about 340×295×175cm, which gives 4 adults 85cm each, and two mats side by side still leave room. The inside of the fly has a black coating with a light-blocking rate of 99.9% or more.
This is a weak point. The fly's minimum waterproof rating is 2,000mm, 1,000mm lower than the previous Kinoko Tent's 3,000mm. A groundsheet (a mat that protects the floor) is not included, and DOD says the one for the One-Pole Tent M fits. One person can pitch it, but DOD recommends two or more adults. My Kinoko Tent 2 review compares it with the original in numbers.
#2 Snow Peak Amenity Dome M | The Classic, With Color-Coded Frame
If you can't decide, get this. At 8kg for 4 people, it is 2kg each, tied with the LOGOS and the Touring Dome/ST for the lightest per person of the 5. Matching tape in the same color marks where the inner and fly meet, and the frame ends are color-coded too. It is hard to put together wrong, even the first time. 18 duralumin 17cm pegs come with it.
This is a weak point. The waterproof rating is 1,800mm for both fly and floor, lower than the Kinoko Tent 2's fly. The list price is JPY 52,800, and the official store showed a sale price of JPY 20,790 on Oct 21, 2026. At that price it is the easiest to buy of the 5.
Snow Peak Amenity Dome M
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 42,240 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 52,800 between shops. Prices change daily.
#3 LOGOS Air Magic W-Cross Dome M | Up in About 5 Minutes on Air
A good fit if you're not confident putting poles together. It is a new model released Aug 27, 2026, at about 8.0kg. Inflate it and it stands in about 5 minutes. It packs to about 70×30×25cm (52.5L), so it doesn't take much space in a car. A manual pump comes with it.
This is a weak point. The inner is about 210×210×130cm, so 4 people sleeping in it get 52.5cm each. Plan on 2 adults and 2 children. The fly's waterproof rating is 1,600mm, the second lowest after the Touring Dome/ST's about 1,500mm. It costs over JPY 40,000 more than a pole tent of about the same size.
LOGOS Air Magic W Cross Dome M
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 68,335 (as of 10/20). Prices change daily.
#4 Coleman Touring Dome/ST | An Entry Tent for 1 to 2 People
If you want to start cheap with 1 or 2 people, it's #4. JPY 21,780 and about 4kg, with a body of about 265×210×110cm and an inner of about 210×120×100cm. Coleman says the pole pockets make it easy to pitch alone. Pegs, ropes and a carry case come with it (no hammer).
This is a weak point. The fly and floor are both about 1,500mm, and the floor fabric is as thin as the fly. Choose it on the assumption that you put a groundsheet underneath. It is small for a family, so look at the top 3 for family use.
Coleman Touring Dome/ST
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 15,720 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 22,800 between shops. Prices change daily.
#5 Coleman Tough Speed Dome | Bedroom and Living Room in One Tent
A 2026 release and a 2-room tent for 4 to 5 people. The inner is about 340(260)×225×180cm and the outside is about 620×360×210cm, with a full skirt. The waterproof rating is about 2,000mm for fly, floor and roof. The inner hangs from hooks, and you can take it out and use the tent as a large shelter.
This is a weak point. About 17kg and JPY 86,900 are big numbers for a first tent. Per person it is 4.25kg (17 ÷ 4), the heaviest of the 5. You could also wait until you've camped a few times and want a living room.
Coleman Tough Speed Dome
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 69,969 (as of 10/20). Prices vary by up to JPY 86,900 between shops. Prices change daily.
Groundsheets and prep for rainy days
The Kinoko Tent 2 doesn't come with a groundsheet. The Touring Dome/ST also has a floor as thin as its fly, so choose it on the assumption that you lay one underneath. I explain how to read the numbers in my article on tent waterproof ratings.
Not using fire inside a tent is also basic to the instruction manuals. Coleman warns that fire inside a tent can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Who is it for?
This is best for someone buying a first tent for a family of 4. Choose the Kinoko Tent 2 to cut setup effort, the Amenity Dome M for a classic at a low price, and the LOGOS air tent if you're not confident with poles.
If you only want to try camping with 1 or 2 people, the Touring Dome/ST is enough. If you want a bedroom and living room in one tent, see my comparison of 10 two-room tents.
