The Touring Dome/SDX is a buy for one person who also pitches on cold nights or in midsummer. It adds a full skirt and mesh on both sides to the ST, and what increases is only about 300g and JPY 3,520. The floor and packed size are the same, so for spring and autumn only, the ST is enough.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The skirt stops cold winter air, and the all-over mesh lets summer heat out. Putting these two opposite things in one tent is what the 300g is. When you sleep in a tent more than half the year, the same tent meets midsummer nights and frosty mornings. So I read this 300g not as weight but as the price for two more seasons you can pitch in.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Dividing the price difference of JPY 3,520 by the added 300g gives about JPY 11.7 per gram. That is about 2 times the whole SDX's JPY 5.9 per gram, so the added part is built at a higher price than the body
  • The difference from the 2- to 3-person LDX is +JPY 2,200 and +1.3kg. The floor goes from 2.52㎡ to 3.78㎡, 1.5 times, and the price per 1㎡ of floor is JPY 2,765 lower for the LDX
  • The official winter build is a skirt that blocks cold air from flowing in. For fire inside the tent, the instruction manual warns of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and the like

The difference between the Touring Dome/SDX and the ST is 300g and JPY 3,520

The SDX is a buy for one person who also pitches on cold nights or in midsummer.

The Touring Dome/SDX and Touring Dome/ST differ by not even 1cm in official dimensions. The size in use, the inner floor and the stuff sack are the same. Only the weight and price differ: the SDX is about 300g heavier and JPY 3,520 more.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was the 300g and JPY 3,520 difference from the ST. What was added is a full skirt and mesh on both sides. The 2.52㎡ floor and the packed size (about 19 × 49cm in diameter) do not change.

What I wavered on was the LDX. For +JPY 2,200 the floor becomes 1.5 times. I still say the SDX for 1 people, because without changing the shape of the load, it can be pitched on cold nights and in midsummer both.

Differences from the ST, LX and LDX

ModelWeightOfficial priceWeight per ㎡ of floorPrice per square meter of floor
STAbout 4kgJPY 21,7801,587gJPY 8,643
SDXAbout 4.3kgJPY 25,3001,706gJPY 10,040
LXAbout 5.2kgJPY 24,9701,376gJPY 6,606
LDXAbout 5.6kgJPY 27,5001,481gJPY 7,275
As shown at Coleman's official online shop on Oct 13, 2026 (incl. tax). The floor is 2.1 × 1.2 = 2.52㎡ for the ST and SDX and 2.1 × 1.8 = 3.78㎡ for the LX and LDX, and I divided weight and price by this (for example the SDX is 4,300 ÷ 2.52 = 1,706g).

As a percentage of the ST, weight is 7.5% and price 16.2% more. Dividing JPY 3,520 by 300g is about JPY 11.7 per gram, about 2 times the whole SDX's JPY 5.9 (25,300 ÷ 4,300).

  • For people who pitch only in spring and autumn, the ST. In the comparison table on the official feature page too, the ST and LX seasons are “spring to autumn.”
  • For 2 sleeping, or people who want all their gear inside, the LDX. The difference from the SDX is +JPY 2,200 and +1.3kg, and the floor becomes 1.5 times (3.78 ÷ 2.52).

The skirt and all-over mesh added on the SDX

On a tent with a separate fly and inner, there is a gap between the fly's hem and the ground, and in winter cold wind comes in through it. A skirt is a cloth that closes this gap. Coleman's explanation: “It blocks not only rainwater, but cold air in winter and insects in summer.”

Close it and air gets trapped. So the inner has mesh on both sides, and an opening of mesh only under the door was added.

What I praise, and what to watch

The best thing is that the shape of your load does not change when you add seasons. In the solo tent article lining up 12 solo tents too, this was the only tent that pitched both “full skirt” and “all-season compatible.”

This part is a weak point. 1,706g per ㎡ of floor is more than double tents for people who carry on their backs (433 to 788g in the same article's table), a weight you carry by car or motorcycle. If you walk with it on your back, the RYNEL-2 review will help.

The ST's weight disagrees within the official pages: the product page says about 4kg and the LDX feature page's comparison table says about 4.5kg. This article calculated with the product page's number.

Who it suits

  • People who go by car or motorcycle and also pitch on cold nights in November or March.
  • People who also pitch in midsummer lowlands. Mesh on both sides is only on the SDX and LDX of the four.

Who is it for?

It suits 1 people who also pitch on cold nights or in midsummer. Over the ST, +300g and +JPY 3,520 gets you a full skirt and mesh on both sides.

If you own the ST and only camp in spring and autumn, the floor and bag are the same, so your current tent is enough. For people who carry on their backs or sleep two, look at other models too. A skirt blocks cold air, and staying on snow is a different matter.
