The best winter sleeping bag is NANGA's new AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX. Comfort temperature −6℃, limit −13℃, about 1,190g, JPY 67,100. It went on sale on Sep 11, 2026. I lined up four bags by the night's lowest temperature, including the Revibe Bag -15 from the same new range and the mont-bell and NEMO bags with a −3℃ comfort temperature.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

For winter, choose by comfort temperature, not limit temperature. Buy on the "−13℃" in the table and you may end up out on a night 7℃ colder than the −6℃ at which the bag lets you sleep stretched out. The 630DX has a −6℃ comfort temperature and weighs 1,190g, and packs to about 5.1L. So for a winter night with a low around −5℃, this is my bag.

Key points

  • The 630DX has a comfort temperature of −6℃ and a limit of −13℃, a gap of 7℃. The colder the bag is meant for, the wider that gap gets
  • The Revibe Bag -15 from the same new range has a comfort temperature of −8℃, costs JPY 9,900 less than the 630DX, and weighs 70g more. It packs to about 12.7L, about 2.5 times the 630DX (about 5.1L)
  • At a comfort temperature of −3℃, the NEMO Disco 15 weighs 1,230g and costs JPY 31,900, and the mont-bell Down Hugger 800 #1 weighs 918g and costs JPY 44,800. The gap is 312g and JPY 12,900

For a winter sleeping bag, read the comfort temperature, not the limit temperature on the label

The NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX has a comfort temperature of −6℃ and a limit temperature of −13℃, a gap of 7℃. Read that as "usable down to −13℃" and buy it, and you end up out on a night 7℃ colder than the −6℃ at which the bag lets you sleep stretched out.

For your first winter bag, choose by whether its comfort temperature reaches the lowest temperature where you'll stay. I ranked on comfort temperature, weight and packed size, with a low around −5℃ as the target.

I looked at comfort temperature, packed size, then price

First I checked whether the comfort temperature reaches −5℃. Then I lined up weight, packed size and price within the same temperature range, and worked out the price per gram of down too.

When you sleep in a tent over half the year, in winter the number on your bag is the length of the night. So I don't read the big number on the label. I read only the comfort temperature row.

What temperature rating should a winter camping sleeping bag have?

One whose comfort temperature is at or below the lowest temperature at your campsite. For a low around −5℃, the 630DX (comfort −6℃) and the Revibe Bag -15 (comfort −8℃) reach it. The Disco 15, with a −3℃ comfort temperature, falls 2℃ short and suits places with a low down to −3℃.

NANGA describes the range below the limit temperature as "dangerous, with a risk of hypothermia". I subtracted comfort from limit temperature for 15 bags in my article on comfort and limit temperatures.

Where people stumble with winter bags: temperature, packing, mat

  • Temperature: the comfort temperature should be at or below the lowest temperature. The makers say the rated temperature can differ from how you actually feel.
  • Packed size: winter bags carry more down and get bigger. Choose by whether it fits in your car's cargo area or whether you'll walk with it.
  • Mat: a sleeping bag's temperature only works if the mat under it stops the ground's chill. Aim for an R-value of 5 or higher and choose in my article on mat R-values.

What decided the order of the 4 bags

RankModelWhy it ranks here
1630DXComfort −6℃ at 1,190g and about 5.1L packed. Small and light among the bags that reach a −5℃ night. But JPY 67,100
2Revive -15Comfort −8℃, JPY 9,900 cheaper than the 630DX. But it packs to about 12.7L, about 2.5 times larger
3Down Hugger 800 #1Comfort −3℃ at 918g and 5.7L. It falls 2℃ short of −5℃
4Disco 15Comfort −3℃ at a low JPY 31,900. But it weighs 1,230g and packs to about 10.0L

No. 1 NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX | −6℃ comfort in about 5.1L

I'll say it with some heat. It went on sale on Sep 11, 2026, the first redesign in 8 years. It holds 630g of down. At about 1,190g with a −6℃ comfort temperature it is light for a winter bag, and it packs to about 5.1L. The shell is waterproof and breathable at a 20,394mm waterproof rating, ready for the condensation on a winter tent wall.

Price per gram of down is about JPY 106.5 (67,100 ÷ 630). This is a weak point. At the highest price of the 4, it costs JPY 9,900 more than the Revibe Bag -15. It's the bag for people who want to verify the amount of down in numbers and carry it small. The differences between old and new are in my AURORA TEX LIGHT review.

No. 2 NANGA Revibe Bag -15 | −8℃ comfort for JPY 57,200

It suits people who want strength against the cold at a lower price. Comfort −8℃ and limit −15℃ are the lowest numbers of the 4, and it costs JPY 9,900 less than the 630DX. At about JPY 75.3 per gram of down, it is on the low side even among NANGA's 14 new models. It suits people who carry it by car and want to sleep with room to spare.

This is a weak point. It is only 70g heavier than the 630DX, but it packs to about 12.7L, about 2.5 times larger. That is a big number for gear you carry on foot.

No. 3 mont-bell Seamless Down Hugger 800 #1 | −3℃ comfort at 918g

If you want light, take the #1. Comfort −3℃ at 918g and 5.7L packed. It is 312g lighter than the Disco 15 at the same −3℃ comfort temperature, and packs smaller.

This is a weak point. JPY 44,800 is JPY 12,900 more than the Disco 15. It falls 2℃ short of a −5℃ low, so use it where the low stays above −3℃.

No. 4 NEMO Disco 15 | −3℃ comfort for JPY 31,900

If you want cheap, this is it. It holds 642g of 650FP water-repellent down, about JPY 49.7 per gram of down. A vent at the chest lets heat out. The "15" in the name is 15 degrees Fahrenheit (about −9.4℃), which matches the −9℃ limit temperature.

This is a weak point. At 1,230g and about 10.0L it is larger than the #1 at the same −3℃ comfort temperature. It is one bag for autumn and winter for people who carry by car. More in my Disco 15 review.

Extra: if you only drive, the Coleman Tasman Camping Mummy/L-15

The product page gives just one temperature: "usable at −15℃ or above". A Coleman guide describes the same model's comfort temperature as −9℃. It weighs about 3.4kg, so it is a winter bag you carry by car, not one to carry on your back.

What each extra degree of cold resistance costs

Going from the Disco 15 (comfort −3℃, JPY 31,900) to the Revibe Bag -15 (comfort −8℃, JPY 57,200) buys 5℃ for JPY 25,300, or JPY 5,060 per degree. Going to the 630DX (comfort −6℃, JPY 67,100) buys 3℃ for JPY 35,200, or about JPY 11,733 per degree.

The 630DX has a comfort temperature 2℃ higher than the Revibe Bag -15, yet costs JPY 9,900 more. That difference buys a pack about 7.6L smaller (12.7 − 5.1) and 70g less weight. If you only want more cold resistance, take the Revibe; if you will also pay for packing small, take the 630DX.

Who is it for?

Who it suits most: people staying in late autumn through winter with a low around −5℃. To carry it small, the 630DX. To keep the price down and drive in, the Revibe Bag -15. If the low only reaches −3℃, the 918g #1 or the Disco 15 is enough.

If you're only 2 to 3℃ short, you can make up the difference with insulated clothing or a liner sheet. Along with the bag, it also helps to check how the tent keeps out cold air. For your first bag, read Best Sleeping Bags for Beginners: 5 Picks too.

FAQ

For a low around −5℃, the NANGA AURORA TEX LIGHT 630DX. Comfort −6℃, about 1,190g, JPY 67,100.

Should I choose a winter sleeping bag by comfort or limit temperature?

By comfort temperature. The limit temperature assumes you sleep curled up, and for the 630DX it sits 7℃ from the comfort temperature.

Do I need a mat with a winter sleeping bag?

Yes. NANGA explains that it measures temperature with the bag on a mat. The mat stops the ground's chill, so aim for an R-value of 5 or higher.

Revibe Bag -15 or 630DX: which should I choose?

If you carry it by car, take the Revibe Bag -15. Its comfort rating is −8℃, and it costs JPY 9,900 less. If you walk with it or want to free up cargo space, take the 630DX, which packs about 7.6L smaller.
