The Therm-a-Rest Military NeoAir XTherm is a pad for people who lay this one pad alone on rock or frozen ground. Its R-value of 7.3 equals the current NeoAir XTherm NXT, and what is added is a 200-denier fabric at +310g and +JPY 17,600 (RW), so for winter insulation the NXT is enough. Mochizuki, the official distributor in Japan, lists it as due in "mid-November 2026," at JPY 66,000 (RW) and JPY 71,500 (L) incl. tax.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

Insulation numbers are set by the inside build, and thickening the outer fabric leaves the R-value at 7.3. What moves are weight, price and puncture resistance. So I value this pad not as a warmer pad but as a pad that is hard to puncture.

Key points

  • Against the current model in the same RW size, weight is 850 − 540 = +310g and price is 66,000 − 48,400 = +JPY 17,600. The R-value of 7.3 and thickness of 7.6cm do not change
  • The fabric is 200-denier nylon. That is about 2.9 times the current model's 70-denier bottom (200 ÷ 70) and about 6.7 times the 30-denier top
  • Sizes are only the RW and L, both 64cm wide. The 51cm-wide, 439g R size that the current model has is not on the Military product page

Military vs NXT: same R-value of 7.3, +310g, due in mid-November

The Military NeoAir XTherm is not on sale yet. Mochizuki's notice of Oct 13 says "sales are planned to start in mid-Nov 2026." The price is JPY 66,000 (RW) and JPY 71,500 (L) incl. tax.

The R-value (the number for how well it stops cold from the ground) is 7.3, the same as the current NeoAir XTherm NXT. What differs is a puncture-resistant bottom fabric.

How I judged it

The first thing I looked at was the R-value, and 7.3 did not change by even 1 step from the current model. Subtracting in the same RW size, weight is +310g and price is +JPY 17,600.

Sleeping in a tent more than half the year, a pad is a tool you set on the ground every night. So after the R-value I looked at the bottom fabric. The 200 denier (thread thickness) is about 2.9 times the current bottom, but if the aim is winter insulation, there is no reason to add JPY 17,600 for the same warmth.

As listed on the official page (Mochizuki; prices incl. tax) on Oct 14, 2026. Difference = Military − NXT.

The L size (64 × 196cm) is 910g and JPY 71,500. The NXT's L is 567g and JPY 50,600, so the gap is +343g and +JPY 20,900. The +JPY 20,900 written in our article on camping gear coming soon was this L-to-L gap.

Converted to price per R-value of 1, the Military is 66,000 ÷ 7.3 = JPY 9,041 and the NXT is 48,400 ÷ 7.3 = JPY 6,630. The price of buying the same insulation is 1.36 times as much.

Why weight rises while the R-value does not change

Inside the XTherm are two tiers of triangular air chambers with two heat-reflecting films. Insulation is the job of this interior. The Military product page also describes the same build and names the films.

The outer fabric does a different job. For the current model, the 70-denier bottom is said to raise puncture resistance. The Military version makes it 200 denier. With the same inside and only a thicker outside, the R-value stays put and weight rises; that is how I read it. How R-values are measured is in our article on mat R-values.

The weak points

Point 1 is that there is no 51cm-wide R size. The current model's R is 439g and JPY 46,200. The gap to the Military RW is 850 − 439 = 411g, a big difference for people who lay it in a one-person narrow tent or carry it on their back.

Point 2 is that for puncture protection, another approach is cheaper. Lay a Z Lite Sol (R-value 2, 410g, JPY 11,550) under the NXT RW and the total is 48,400 + 11,550 = JPY 59,950, 540 + 410 = 950g, with an R-value of 7.3 + 2 = 9.3. That is JPY 6,050 less than the Military RW and only 100g heavier, and the R-value is 2 higher. The Z Lite Sol is 51cm wide, so it cannot protect the 13cm that sticks out.

Who the Military suits, and who is fine with the NXT

  • Who the Military suits: people who sleep on one pad with nothing under it on rock or frozen ground. People who carry by car and do not mind 310g.
  • Who is fine with the NXT: people whose aim is insulation on snow or in midwinter. The R-value of 7.3 is the same.

Who is it for?

The best fit is someone who sleeps on one pad on rock or frozen ground. The bottom's 200 denier is about 2.9 times the thickness of the current model, with the R-value of 7.3 intact. As a puncture-resistant pad, it is a dependable build.

If you already own an NXT, the R-value and thickness are the same, so the one you have is enough. For camping on foot, the light R-size NXT is another way to choose.

FAQ

When is the Military NeoAir XTherm released?

It is due in "mid-November 2026," with the date undecided. The Oct 14 product page only offered a stock-notification sign-up.

How does the Military NeoAir XTherm differ from the NXT?

The bottom fabric and weight. The R-value of 7.3 and thickness of 7.6cm are the same; the RW gets a 200-denier fabric and is 310g heavier.

Is there a 51cm-wide R size of the Military NeoAir XTherm?

No. The product page lists only two: the RW (64 × 183cm) and the L (64 × 196cm).

Can I inflate it by mouth in the cold?

In freezing cold, moisture in your breath can freeze inside, so avoid inflating by mouth. A pump sack is included.
