Snow Peak's 30th Anniversary Fire Pit L Matte Grey is a limited edition going on sale on Oct 31, 2026 at 10:00. It costs JPY 29,700 incl. tax. It measures 455×455×315mm in use and weighs 5.5kg, the same shape and size as the standard Fire Pit L. The difference is a special nitrided stainless steel surface and the 30th-anniversary limited run.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Spend half the year camping and a fire pit stops being a consumable and becomes a partner for 10 years or more. So if I choose on function, I choose the standard L. The Matte Grey has the same shape, size and function, and the JPY 8,580 difference is an extra for people who want the black surface. If you use it 30 times a year, that is JPY 286 per use, an amount you can accept if you want that black to show in your fire every time.

Fire Pit L Matte Grey release date and price: when is it out?
Snow Peak's "30th Anniversary Fire Pit L Matte Grey" went on sale on Saturday, Oct 31, 2026 at 10:00. The tax-included price is JPY 29,700. The release date has passed, but the online store product page I re-read on Nov 1, 2026 showed "out of stock" with a "notify me when back in stock" button. The page does not state how many can be bought or when it will be restocked.
This limited edition marks 30 years since the fire pit first appeared, and it is sold at Snow Peak's own stores and the online store. The product text says the iconic form stays as is, so it is the standard Fire Pit L with a different surface treatment.

My experience: four nights with a borrowed standard L, and only a look at the Matte Grey in a store
What I used was the standard Fire Pit L, which I borrowed from a rental service for 4 nights in total. I looked at the 30th anniversary Matte Grey online on the night of Oct 31, but it was out of stock and I couldn't buy it. I have not used it, so this article is an official-information review.
Loading the 5.5kg into the car took about 1 minute, and I walked it about 30m from the parking lot to the site. Assembly takes about 25 seconds. Dealing with the ash took about 10 minutes with a fire-extinguishing pot, and the burn colour turned brown from the second night. The 5.5kg in the article matched how it felt.
I put in 6 logs at a time, each 5cm thick and 35cm long. The fire took about 8 minutes to settle. With 3m/s wind, a few sparks flew, so I laid a fire sheet. I cooked meat and a hot pot.
The problems were the 5.5kg weight and a storage bag that's hard to hold. I solved that by moving it on a carry cart. A fire sheet kept burn marks off the ground. The legs are short, so I felt that sparks fly lower than your feet. A low chair suits it.
I saw the Matte Grey in person in a Snow Peak store. It is black and calm, and smooth to the touch. My impression was that fingerprints and dirt show less than on the standard stainless.
I would choose the standard L. The function is the same, so I see the JPY 8,580 difference as an extra for looks. The fire pit I wavered over is the Uniflame Fire Grill. The Matte Grey is for people who choose on looks.
Snow Peak 30th Anniversary Fire Pit L Matte Grey Official-Specs review: how I judged it
The first thing I checked was that the shape and size haven't changed. It is 455×455×315mm in use, 560×645×32mm packed, and 5.5kg. That matches the standard L, so the case, table, and fire sheet you already own still work.
Next I worked out the price gap. The standard L is JPY 21,120, so the difference is JPY 8,580 (29,700−21,120), about 1.4x. But a fire pit is something you use for years. At 30 uses that's JPY 286 extra per use (8,580÷30), and if the black surface looks good in the light of the fire every time, I think that's a small difference.
What gave me pause is that no function has been added. The surface is nitrided stainless steel, aimed at looks and surface hardness. Nothing says it burns hotter or weighs less. So I recommend it to people who want to own the 30th-anniversary limited edition, not to people choosing on features.
How is it different from the standard Fire Pit L?

Strengths and weak points
What works well is the special feel of a 30th anniversary edition and the decision not to change the size. Other limited items are mostly accessories, but this is the fire pit itself, refinished. It is easy to keep as the one you hand down to the next generation. A fire pit is a tool you grow with, not one you replace. Over 10 years it costs about JPY 2,970 a year (29,700÷10), and the extra over the regular L is about JPY 858 a year (8,580÷10).
What to watch: it weighs 5.5kg, and with the same size and weight as the standard L there is no functional upgrade. A fire pit stays hot after use, so wait until it cools before touching it, and follow the maker's manual and the campsite rules.
Who is it for?
It suits anyone who planned to buy a Fire Pit L and would rather pick the commemorative edition. It's the same fire pit as everyone else's, but with a black surface it becomes the look of your own site.
If you already own the standard L, rather than replacing it you could build out the setup with accessories like the fire wind screen that comes out the same day. For a first fire pit, our fire pit picks for beginners help you choose by size.
