The Field Rise (SDC-001) is a rooftop tent that mounts on a car roof, released by Snow Peak on October 10, 2026. The price is JPY 396,000 (incl. tax), it sleeps 1–2, and it weighs about 51kg including the mat. Its frame is inflated (air frame), and both setup and takedown take about 5 minutes.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The Field Rise cuts setup down to 5 minutes, and in exchange you have to choose the right car and roof rack. You don't have to worry about sloping ground or rocks; your bed is ready as soon as you arrive. If you have a car that can carry about 51kg on the roof and a budget close to JPY 400,000, the more nights you camp, the more it pays for itself.

Key points

  • The price is JPY 396,000 (incl. tax). Flat-rate shipping anywhere in Japan is JPY 23,100, for JPY 419,100 in total
  • Weighs about 51kg (including a 3kg mat). Packed size 210×76×35cm. Needs a dedicated roof rack (CARMATE INNO series)
  • Setup about 5 minutes, takedown about 5 minutes (tent only). Waterproof rating 1,800mm or more for the fly and tarp

How I judged it

The first things I looked at were setup time and the weight on the roof. A rooftop tent doesn't care about the ground, but the car carries the weight instead. Setup and takedown each take about 5 minutes.

Spending more than half the year in a tent, I think the more often you pitch, the more the difference in effort counts. The more nights you camp, the more those few minutes each time add up. Weight is a separate question, though. The total weight on the roof is about 51kg, or about 48kg without the mat.

With that in mind, I recommend this tent to one or two people who drive out almost every week and put fast setup first.

Snow Peak put it on sale on October 10, 2026. The price is JPY 396,000 (incl. tax). Flat-rate shipping anywhere in Japan is JPY 23,100, so you pay JPY 419,100 to have it delivered. It's for 1–2 people, so shared by two that's JPY 198,000 each.

I explain what kind of rain a 1,800mm waterproof rating is good for in the tent waterproof rating article.

vs the Aero Cumulus Shell: same air frame, different place to put it

Snow Peak also makes another air-supported tent, the Aero Cumulus Shell (JPY 242,000). That one is a big shelter pitched on the ground; the Field Rise is a bed that sits on the roof.

It's twice as heavy, but the car carries the Field Rise, not you. Inflation takes the same about 5 minutes, so the choice comes down to "a living room on the ground, or a bed on the roof".

Reading the roof load and packed size

It packs to 210×76×35cm, a volume of about 559L (2.1 × 0.76 × 0.35 × 1,000). To mount it, you need a CARMATE INNO series roof rack. You can check fit with your car model in CARMATE's fitting database.

If you also carry the tarp, the tent's about 51kg plus the tarp's about 4kg comes to about 55kg. Every car has its own roof load limit, so add the rack's weight to this 55kg and check that number against your car's table.

Three things to watch

First, you have to choose the car. Both the load you can put on the roof and the allowable total weight when the tent is in use vary by car.

Second, the price. JPY 396,000 for the tent alone, JPY 419,100 with shipping, and you need a rack to mount it on top of that.

Third, the effort of taking it off and where to store it. Decide before you buy whether you'll drive around with about 51kg on the roof or mount it only in the seasons you use it, and you won't be stuck later.

Who the Field Rise suits

It suits one or two people who drive out every weekend and want to lie down as soon as they arrive. It stands up on air with no pegs, and the bed is on the roof, so wet ground and rocks don't matter. The about 51kg even includes a 3kg mat, saving you the work of laying out bedding: it's thoughtfully built as a place to sleep.

If your family wants a big living area, you could choose the ground-pitched Aero Cumulus Shell or something from autumn 2026's new tents.
