The Iwatani Aburi no Takumi (CB-ABT-1) is a cassette-gas robata grill that went on sale in stages from Sep 15, 2026. It is the pick for grilling fish and meat on the table as if over charcoal, and the deciding point is that it keeps the 2.3kW output and about 90 minutes while rebuilding the legs and water tray. The official online shop lists it at JPY 10,978.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
It grills with the heat of a glowing radiant plate, the same as the Aburiya line since 2016. What changed are the legs that touch the table and the rim of the water tray you handle. So I read the Aburi no Takumi not as a new model with more power but as a refinement of a tool you set on the table and wash every time.
Key points
- Same as the Aburiya II: 2.3kW, about 90 minutes of continuous burn, 280 × 180mm grill. What differs is the legs (die-cast aluminum, 3mm taller) and the water tray rim (hemmed)
- The grill area is 504cm² (28 × 18). One cassette gas can lasts about 90 minutes, so gas use is about 2.8g per minute (169 ÷ 60)
- The half grill and skewer stand go on sale in stages from October 2026. A half pot (working name) is also in development

When is the Aburi no Takumi out, and what does it cost?
The Iwatani Aburi no Takumi (CB-ABT-1) went on sale in stages at stores nationwide from Sep 15, 2026. The suggested retail price is open pricing, and the official online shop, Iwatani i-Collect, lists JPY 10,978.
It is the newest model in the long-selling Aburiya series, with the same 2.3kW output and about 90 minutes of continuous burn as the Aburiya II. It is a new model with rebuilt legs and water tray.
How I judged it
The first thing I looked at was what stays the same as the Aburiya II. Output, gas consumption and grill size are the same, so the amount you can grill and the time do not change.
Then wouldn't the old model do? That is where I wavered. Still, I recommend the new one because the legs are now die-cast aluminum like the Tough Maru and 3mm taller. For a tabletop tool, heat reaching the table is the biggest worry, and that is where they put their hands in.

How the Aburi no Takumi differs from the Aburiya II
| Item | Aburi no Takumi CB-ABT-1 | Aburiya II CB-ABR-2 |
|---|---|---|
| Body size | 409×222×136mm | 409×214×134mm |
| Weight | About 2.3kg | About 2.4kg |
| Output / gas consumption | 2.3kW / about 169g/h | 2.3kW / about 169g/h |
| Continuous burn time | About 90 minutes | About 90 minutes |
| Grill | 280×180mm | 280×180mm |
| Water tray | Steel, hemmed rim | Steel (enameled) |
The grill area is 504cm² (28 × 18), a little smaller than an A4 sheet (about 624cm²). Gas use is about 2.8g per minute (169 ÷ 60), so one 250g can lasts about 89 minutes (250 ÷ 169 × 60), which matches the listed 90 minutes.
Weight drops by about 100g, while depth grows by 8mm and height by 2mm. The differences are small, so it takes about the same space.
How the Aburi no Takumi works | grilling with a glowing plate, not a flame
The Aburiya series grills with the heat of a red-hot radiant plate instead of applying flame directly (Japan Patent No. 5254079). It claims a charcoal-like far-infrared effect that grills meat and fish plump and fragrant.
Dripping fat falls into a water tray. The Aburi no Takumi folds the whole rim of this tray over in a hemming process to make it smoother on the fingers when washing. It is a part you take off and wash every time, so the change is plain but effective.
Spending more than half the year camping, you find that a grilling tool earns its place by how little cleanup it needs rather than how much it grills. That is why I look at the rim of the water tray and the leg material too.
The weak points
The amount you can grill and the time are unchanged from the previous model. If you already own an Aburiya II, the only reasons to replace it are the legs and the water tray. The dedicated half grill and skewer stand are "due in stages from October 2026," and no price is out yet.
Dedicated accessories, and cautions for outdoor use
Combining the half grill and the skewer stand lets you grill skewers and meat at the same time. A half pot (working name) is also in development. Replacement grills, a set of 2 dedicated to the Aburiya series (CB-ABR-AMI2), are listed on i-Collect.
The Aburiya series is not for use inside a tent or a car (a warning on the Aburiya II product page). Cassette gas loses output easily in the cold, so please read how CB and OD canisters differ in the cold as well.

Who the Aburi no Takumi suits
It suits people who want to grill dried fish and yakitori on the table without lighting charcoal. It carries over the 2.3kW output and about 90 minutes, and reworks the legs to pass less heat to the table and the water tray to be easier to wash. It is a new model for people who want to keep grilling at the table for a long time.
For a charcoal barbecue with a crowd, grilling over charcoal is another way to choose. It is collected in our ranking of barbecue grills.
