Decide camp tableware by material and price per person. My pick for a family of four's first set is Coleman's Organic Tableware Set Family (about JPY 1,998 per person), for the Sierra cup Snow Peak's titanium, and for cutlery Uniflame's fan Cutlery solo. I list mont-bell's plate and joined chopsticks, bought at its official shop, as extras with their numbers.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Titanium and stainless steel conduct heat almost the same (thermal conductivity 17 and 16). What differs is density: titanium is only about 60% of stainless steel's. So I make titanium only the cup I carry out every time and put to my lips, and decide family plates by price per person.
Key points
- Tableware sets for 4 people weigh about the same: Coleman (12 pieces, 1.7kg) and Snow Peak (16 pieces, 1,760g). The price for 1 people is about JPY 1,998 and JPY 5,544, a gap of about 2.8x
- The same 310mL Snow Peak Sierra cup is 37g in titanium and 100g in stainless steel. You pay JPY 924 for the 63g difference
- For cutlery for 1 person, the Uniflame fan Cutlery solo is 3 pieces at about 94g and JPY 1,980. The extra mont-bell Stack-In Wild Chopsticks plus a swap-in spoon and fork come to 28g and JPY 2,600

The same 310mL Sierra cup comes to 37g or 100g depending on material
Snow Peak's Sierra cup is 37g in titanium and 100g in stainless steel. The capacity is 310mL for both.
Weight, price and care of tableware change with what it is made of. So I split tableware and cutlery into three situations and chose one pick for each.
How I chose
The first thing I looked at was weight and price converted to one person. Because the number of pieces in a set differs by maker, I divided by 4 before lining them up.
When you spend half the year camping, you wash and dry tableware hundreds of times a year. So next I looked at stacked size and whether it comes with a drying case.
I made these picks from what you can buy on Rakuten. I list mont-bell, which you can buy only at its official shop, as extras outside the picks, with its numbers.
Situation 1: equip camp tableware for a family of 4

| Model | Materials | Contents per person | Weight per person | Price per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coleman Organic Tableware Set Family | Bamboo, corn, melamine and others | Plate, bowl, cup | 425g | About JPY 1,998 |
| Snow Peak Tableware Set L Family | Stainless steel (18-8) | 2 kinds of plate, 2 kinds of bowl | 440g | JPY 5,544 |
| Extra: mont-bell Alpine Stacking Plate 20 + Bowl 14 | Polypropylene | Plate, bowl | 150g | JPY 1,320 |
Pick: Coleman Organic Tableware Set Family
Here is what I am excited about. Plate, bowl and cup for four, about JPY 1,998 per person. Per-person weight differs from Snow Peak's stainless steel by only 15g, yet the price is about 1/2.8 of it (5,544 ÷ 1,998).
The stacked size is about Φ260 × 120mm, and you can hang it to dry in the included mesh case. The official listing is heat resistant to 140°C and dishwasher safe. This part is a weak point. Its 425g per person is about 2.8 times mont-bell's plate and bowl (150g), an extra.
Coleman Organic Tableware Set Family
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 6,991 (as of 10/14). Prices vary by up to JPY 10,274 between shops. Prices change daily.
If you choose by material over price: Snow Peak Tableware Set L Family
It is 18-8 stainless steel 0.4mm thick, in 4 kinds of different depth, 4 of each, 16 pieces in all. Watch out: no cup is included. It suits families who want to use metal ware for a long time.
Snow Peak Tableware Set L Family
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 18,808 (as of 10/14). Prices vary by up to JPY 29,920 between shops. Prices change daily.
Set out plates for four and the table runs out of room first. I compare tabletop sizes in the table ranking.
Situation 2: choose one Sierra cup

| Model | Capacity | Weight | Weight per 100mL | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snow Peak Titanium Sierra Cup | 310mL | 37g | 11.9g | JPY 2,508 |
| Snow Peak Stainless Steel Sierra Cup | 310mL | 100g | 32.3g | JPY 1,584 |
| Uniflame Tsubame-Sanjo Sierra Cup 300 (stainless steel) | About 300mL | About 90g | 30.0g | JPY 1,210 |
Pick: Snow Peak Titanium Sierra Cup
At 11.9g per 100mL it is about a third of the two stainless steel ones. It has a scale inside, so one cup can serve as a bowl, a cup and a measuring cup. This part is a weak point. It costs JPY 924 more than Snow Peak's stainless steel one, which works out to about JPY 15 per gram to save 63g (924 ÷ 63).
It suits the one cup for yourself that you carry every time.
Snow Peak Titanium Sierra Cup
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 2,508 (as of 10/14). Prices vary by up to JPY 3,960 between shops. Prices change daily.
To equip the whole family: Uniflame Tsubame-Sanjo Sierra Cup 300
JPY 1,210 for 1, and JPY 4,840 even for a set of 4. It has an inner scale and stacks for storage. Watch out for the weight of about 90g, about 360g for 4. It suits a family's side plates when carried by car.
Uniflame Tsubame-Sanjo Sierra Cup 300
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 1,210 (as of 10/14). Prices change daily.
I compare things for boiling and simmering separately in the cookware ranking. For a cup that keeps warm, there is also the Snow Peak Thermo Tumbler 360 review.
Situation 3: equip camp cutlery per person

| Model | What is included | Weight | Chopstick length | Official price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uniflame fan Cutlery solo | Spoon, fork, chopsticks | About 94g | About 22.5cm | JPY 1,980 |
| Extra: mont-bell Stack-In Wild Chopsticks + dedicated spoon and fork set | Chopsticks, swap-in spoon and fork | 28g | 22cm (13.5cm stored) | JPY 2,600 |
| Snow Peak Wabuki M | Chopsticks | About 26g (case about 14g) | 20.5cm (about 11.3cm stored) | JPY 5,280 |
Pick: Uniflame fan Cutlery solo
Spoon, fork and chopsticks, three pieces for JPY 1,980, or JPY 660 each. The spoon and fork are stainless steel and natural wood, the chopsticks ironwood, and the lengths run from 18.5 to 22.5cm. This part is a weak point. It does not fold, so the longest chopsticks, 22.5cm, is the stored length. Four sets come to about 376g and JPY 7,920. For a spoon whose tip lifts when set down, there is also SOTO's new UKU Spoon.
Uniflame fan Cutlery solo
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 1,980 (as of 10/14). Prices vary by up to JPY 2,885 between shops. Prices change daily.
For chopsticks that fold short: Snow Peak Wabuki M
Chopsticks joined by screwing a bamboo tip onto a stainless steel grip, stored at about 11.3cm. Watch out for the price: JPY 5,280 for chopsticks alone. It is a 1-pair purchase for people who want to keep it for years as a tool.
Snow Peak Wabuki M
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 5,280 (as of 10/14). Prices vary by up to JPY 6,010 between shops. Prices change daily.
Extras: mont-bell plates, bowls and joined chopsticks (bought at the official online store)
I gave no pick for light plates for solo or small groups, because I found no candidate you can buy on Rakuten. The Alpine Stacking Plate 20 is 85g and 1.1L, the Bowl 14 is 65g and 0.78L, and the two together are 150g and JPY 1,320. That is 275g lighter than Coleman per person and about JPY 678 lower (Coleman includes a cup).
The official listing is heat resistant to 100°C, dishwasher and microwave safe. A note says not to use it to heat foods high in oil or sugar.
The Stack-In Wild Chopsticks are 15g and screw down to 13.5cm. Adding the separately sold spoon and fork (which cannot be used alone) makes 28g and JPY 2,600. That is 66g lighter than the fan Cutlery solo and JPY 620 more. It is listed as dishwasher safe for the resin tips only, not for the aluminum parts, and not microwave safe.
The difference between titanium and stainless steel tableware is density, more than heat conduction
In a Nippon Steel table that carries Japan Titanium Society numbers, thermal conductivity is 17 for pure titanium and 16 for stainless steel (SUS304), almost the same. What differs a lot is density: 4.51 for titanium and 7.9 for stainless steel. In the same shape, titanium weighs about 57%.
But Snow Peak's two cups came to 37g ÷ 100g, or 37%. The density difference alone does not explain it. Heat stored per same volume (volumetric heat capacity) is also 2.3 for titanium against 4 for stainless steel. Being light and thin, the vessel itself holds less heat.
Who is it for?
It suits people who are about to equip the family's tableware for the whole headcount. With Coleman's set, plate, bowl and cup for 1 people cost about JPY 1,998. For yourself, the 37g titanium Sierra cup fits.
If you only go once or twice a year by car, tough dishes from home will do. If you camp solo, you can also start with one Sierra cup and chopsticks.
FAQ
What material is best for camp tableware?
Titanium for the ones you carry for yourself, and for family plates, choose by price per person. For the same 310mL cup, titanium is 37g and stainless steel 100g, and heat conduction is almost the same.
Which camp tableware can go in a dishwasher?
Among the picks, the one the official page says is dishwasher safe is Coleman's set. Among the extras, mont-bell's plate and bowl are dishwasher and microwave safe, and for the chopsticks only the resin tips are dishwasher safe.
Titanium or stainless steel Sierra cup: which is better?
For 1 cup for yourself, titanium (37g, JPY 2,508). If you are equipping the whole family, choose stainless steel (about 90g, JPY 1,210).
How much does camp tableware for a family of 4 weigh?
Coleman's set is 1.7kg and Snow Peak's is 1,760g. Adding 4 sets of fan Cutlery solo adds about 376g.
