How to Choose Camping Gear for Kids and 4 Picks by SituationSleeping Bag Is About 700g, JPY 4,950

My pick for the first sleeping bag for kids' camping is Coleman's School Kids/C10. It is listed with a comfort temperature of 10°C or above, a total weight of about 700g, and JPY 4,950. For the chair I chose LOGOS's Basic Tiny Chair Plus, for the light Black Diamond's Wiz, and for tableware Snow Peak's Titanium Single Mug 220.

A kid's sleeping bag “7°C” is measured differently from an adult's 7°C

Kids' sleeping bags also carry numbers like “comfort temperature 7°C.” But mont-bell's official page says its temperature ratings are measured by the ISO test method, except for the Family Bag and kids' sleeping bags.

The numbers look the same, but their source differs. If you do not know this and line them up against an adult table, your choice goes off.

That is why I split it into four situations. For the sleeping bag, chair, light and tableware, I used the official listings and chose one pick each.

How I chose

First, the listed target. I read the suitable height, the load capacity and whether it is stated as for kids, and then compared weight and price with the adult version.

When you spend half the year camping, cold nights come dozens of times, so I read how a temperature was measured before the number itself. For the chair and tableware, where I could not find a current kids-only product, I narrowed to ones built so a child can sit on or use them.

I made these picks from what you can buy on Rakuten, and put mont-bell, which you can buy only at its official store, in the extras with its numbers.

My pick for a kid's sleeping bag: Coleman School Kids/C10

Here is what I am excited about. It is price. At about 700g total weight and JPY 4,950, it is the lowest-priced bag among the 4 kids' bags in the table. It can also be washed whole.

This part is a weak point. The listed comfort temperature is 10°C or above, so it is for warmer nights than the two 7°C-and-up bags in the table. The length in use is about 180cm, so it suits summer school camps and flatland car camping.

Extras: mont-bell Hollow Bag Kid's #3 and Burrow Suit Kid's #3 (bought at the official online store)

The Hollow Bag Kid's #3 is listed for heights up to 155cm and 7°C and up, at JPY 6,380. That is more than my pick, a difference of JPY 1,430 (6,380 − 4,950). Compared with the adult Family Bag #3, which has the same 7°C-and-up rating, the weight is 77% (1,050 ÷ 1,370) and the price 67% (6,380 ÷ 9,500). The packed volume is 17.4L versus 24.2L, 72%.

The Burrow Suit Kid's #3 is shaped like a person. Hook the hem and you can walk. It comes in two sizes, for heights 110 to 125cm and 135 to 155cm, with widths of 15cm and 20cm. The 110-125 is JPY 11,550, 2.3 times my pick (11,550 ÷ 4,950).

Why temperature numbers are treated separately for kids

mont-bell explains comfort temperature as the temperature at which a person with low cold tolerance can sleep in a relaxed position, and says it measures it by the ISO-defined test method. It then adds that the Family Bag and kids' sleeping bags are excluded.

This is the pitfall. It means the extra pick's Kid's #3 “7°C and up” cannot be said to be the result of the same test as the 7°C in the adult table. I use kids' temperatures as an order of warmth within one company and do not compare them side by side with other companies' numbers. My pick for a kid's chair: LOGOS Basic Tiny Chair Plus

I opened the Coleman and Captain Stag official stores and could not find a current chair named as kids-only, so I chose from low chairs a child can also sit on.

Price decides it. LOGOS writes officially that it is also recommended as a child's chair. The seat is 25cm, and the price is 45% of Captain Stag's (2,970 ÷ 6,600). With a load capacity of about 100kg, an adult sitting stays within the listed range.

This part is a weak point. The load capacity is a guide for sitting still, not a number for children who stand on it or rock it.

Some children want armrests. Then it is Captain Stag's Jule Low-Style Director Chair <Mini>. It is pitched as a low chair “from children to adults,” with a 27cm seat. The weak point is the price: more than double LOGOS's.

The Consumer Affairs Agency's child safety email notes accidents where fingers and hands are pinched in folding step stools and chairs, and urges checking that no child is nearby before opening or closing. My pick for a kids' headlamp: Black Diamond Wiz

I assumed a kids' light would be lighter, but the weights were 69g and about 70g, almost the same, a difference of about 1g. What differs is brightness. The Wiz is one fifth of the adult model (200 ÷ 40).

The official store writes that safety measures were applied to the battery box and headband, and that it complies with the US CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act). It also has an automatic shut-off after 2 hours, so if you fall asleep without turning it off, it does not stay lit. This part is a weak point. The price is 2.2 times the adult model (5,060 ÷ 2,310).

My pick for tableware: Snow Peak Titanium Single Mug 220

I could not find kids-only tableware at the mont-bell or Captain Stag official stores I opened. Snow Peak writes in an official feature that titanium mugs do not carry a metal smell, are light, and can be recommended to children.

Lightness decides it. The smallest, the 220, is 220ml, 45g and JPY 2,970, about 0.2g per ml (45 ÷ 220). This part is a weak point. The sentence in the feature refers to titanium mugs in general, not a stated target age. It suits families who want each child to hold an unbreakable cup.

Who is it for?

It suits families who stay with children in warm seasons. The School Kids/C10 is about 700g and machine washable. I chose a low chair with a 25 to 27cm seat, and the 69g Wiz for the light.

If you also stay on cold spring or autumn nights, the C10's temperature listing is only the single “comfort temperature 10°C or above.” Compare the mont-bell sleeping bags in the extras too. If you have a low-seat chair at home, you can use it as is.
