The Futaheya Rakuda Tent is a 2-room tent worth buying for two adults, or two adults and one small child. The official numbers are JPY 44,000 and about 9.5kg, 10kg lighter and JPY 35,640 cheaper than the Kamaboko Tent 3M. In exchange the outer height is 145cm, and it is not a tent to stand up in.

The Futaheya Rakuda Tent is a buy for two people

It is a buy for two adults, or two adults and one small child.

The weight is about 9.5kg. DOD's other 2-room, the Kamaboko Tent 3M, is about 19.5kg, so this is under half. Yet the longest packed side is 80cm against 69cm, so the lighter one is 11cm longer. A one-touch frame folds with the fabric still attached, so it cannot be split short like poles.

How I judged it

When you sleep in a tent more than half the year, you pitch and strike it dozens of times a year. So the first things I looked at were the packed length of 80cm and the outer height of 145cm. Against the Kamaboko Tent 3M, it is 10kg lighter and JPY 35,640 cheaper, but 50cm lower.

What I wavered on was the capacity. Dividing the 210cm floor by 3 gives 70cm each for 1. I still recommend it for 2 people. It gives 1 people 105cm each, and the price per 1㎡ of floor is JPY 9,977, lower than the Kamaboko Tent 3M.

The ones with two rooms are the Futaheya Rakuda Tent and the Kamaboko Tent 3M. The Kinoko Tent 2 is a single room of just a bedroom, and the Gashiin Tent is written to become a 2-room when connected to the separately sold Gashiin Dome.

Price per ㎡ of outer size is JPY 5,170 for the Futaheya Rakuda Tent (44,000 ÷ 8.51㎡) and JPY 4,148 for the Kamaboko Tent 3M. If you are buying the area when pitched, the bigger tent is cheaper per area. If you are buying only the sleeping space, it is the opposite and this one is lower (44,000 ÷ 4.41㎡, 79,640 ÷ 6.16㎡).

How one-touch setup works

DOD explains a one-touch tent as “a tent with a special structure where the frame and fabric are integrated.” Spread it on the ground and pull the frame's rope, and it rises like an umbrella opening. The one-touch part is on the bedroom side, and the vestibule is raised by threading a Y-shaped pole. Because the frame has many joints, DOD writes “not very strong in strong wind” and suggests thinking about postponing on windy days.

What I praise, and what to watch

What I like

The floor and ground sheet are 5,000mm. That is the same number as the JPY 35,640 pricier Kamaboko Tent 3M for both the floor and the outer (3,000mm). DOD is a company that writes the minimum value, not an average, and I put how to read it in the tent waterproof rating article.

Summer and winter gear come from the start. The outer has a black coating that blocks 99.9% or more of light, UPF50+. The hem has a skirt, and the mesh inner can be closed front and back.

It fits a small plot. The outer size is about 370 × 230cm, 270cm shorter than the Kamaboko Tent 3M's length of about 640cm.

Things to watch

A height of 145cm is a height you stoop to enter. Inside the bedroom it is 120cm, and I think of the vestibule as a place to use sitting in a chair.

Packed it is 80cm. The volume is about 42L (23 × 80 × 23), a little under 60% of the Kamaboko Tent 3M's about 75L, but the length is a number to decide after measuring your car's trunk width.

The poles that raise the vestibule are not included. A note says the official photo of the vestibule used a separately sold Compact Tarp Pole.

Who is it for?

It suits camping for two adults. The bedroom floor is about 210 × 210cm with 105cm each. It is 10kg lighter than the Kamaboko Tent 3M, and setup finishes faster.

For a family of four, a capacity of 3 and a floor of 4.41㎡ gets a bit tight. In a car whose trunk is under 80cm wide, loading takes a little ingenuity.
