The capacity guide for a cooler box is 44 to 55L for a family of four for one night, and 15 to 20L for a solo night. My picks: for solo, Daiwa's Cool Line α3 GU 1500 (15L); for a family of four, Coleman's Xtreme Cooler 52QT (about 49L); for two or more nights, LOGOS's Hyper Subzero Cool Box Slip Lid 40 (about 40L). I chose among 12, converting to weight and price per liter of capacity.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Cold-keeping numbers are measured after the temperature and amount of ice are decided first. Shimano's COOL and Daiwa's KEEP use 40°C with ice at 25% of capacity, LOGOS uses 25°C with ice and cold packs at 36%, and Coleman's new note is the time until the inside goes above 10°C. So before the size of the day count, I read the note's temperature and ice share. Day counts with no stated conditions are left out of my ranking.
Key points
- Even at the same 30L, urethane foam and 5.3kg, Shimano's Fixel is COOL 90 (hours) while the ICEBOX is 4.5 days (108 hours). Just the measuring conditions differ, and it comes to 1.2x
- Of the 12, the ones whose official page says 2L plastic bottles fit standing are Coleman's 54QT Steel Belt Cooler and LOGOS's Slip Lid 40. Reading by inner height, it is 5
- Capacity divided by outer volume is 35 to 37% for the three thick-walled ones and 43 to 47% for Coleman's Xtreme series. The longer a box stays cold, the more of the car's trunk it uses

Cooler box capacity guide: 44 to 55L for a family of 4 for one night
The guide is 44 to 55L for a family of four for one night, and 15 to 20L (by calculation) for solo for one night, adding space for the ice. For two nights, do not double the box; add a 25 to 35L soft cooler and split the food.
How I chose
The first thing I looked at was capacity. In Coleman's own survey (116 family camper groups), most families staying one night used a 44 to 55L hard cooler. I use 11 to 14L per person per night, from dividing by 4 people, as the yardstick.
Next I split my picks by weight and price per liter and capacity against outer size. When you spend more than half the year camping, a cooler is a box you load into and unload from the car every time. So I look at weight and outer size about as much as how it keeps cold.
This is my pick for a family of four for one night.
Coleman Extreme Cooler 52QT
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 8,900 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 12,290 between shops. Prices change daily.

| Shimano Fixel BS 17L | 17L | 3.9kg | JPY 25,850 | COOL 75 |
| LOGOS Hyper Subzero Cooler L | About 20L | About 1.5kg | JPY 13,750 | Ice cream up to 11 hours |
| Coleman Xtreme Cooler 28QT | About 26L | About 3.2kg | JPY 7,590 | Cold-keeping about 3 days |
| Shimano Fixel BS 30L | 30L | 5.3kg | JPY 30,250 | COOL 90 |
| Daiwa Light Trunk α GU 3200 | 32L | 5.0kg | JPY 25,190 | KEEP 96 |

| LOGOS Slip Lid 40 | About 40L | About 4.2kg | JPY 39,000 | 6 days or more |
| YETI Tundra 45 | About 37.8L (calculated from inner size) | 10.43kg | JPY 61,380 | No day count listed |
| Coleman Xtreme Wheeled Cooler 50QT | About 47L | About 6.3kg | JPY 13,970 | Cold-keeping about 5 days |
| Coleman Extreme Cooler 52QT | About 49L | About 4.6kg | JPY 10,890 | Cold-keeping about 5 days |
| Coleman 54QT Steel Belt Cooler | About 51L | About 7.5kg | JPY 31,900 | Cold-keeping about 4 days |
Weight and price per liter, and capacity against outer size
| Model | Weight per liter | Price per liter | Capacity ÷ outer volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daiwa Cool Line α3 GU 1500 | 213g | JPY 1,173 | 42.1% |
| LOGOS Hyper Subzero Cooler L | 75g | JPY 688 | 59.0% |
| Snow Peak Hardlock Cooler 40QT | 289g | JPY 2,015 | 36.9% |
| LOGOS Slip Lid 40 | 105g | JPY 975 | 35.2% |
| YETI Tundra 45 | 276g | JPY 1,624 | 35.8% |
| Coleman Xtreme Wheeled Cooler 50QT | 134g | JPY 297 | 44.3% |
| Coleman Extreme Cooler 52QT | 94g | JPY 222 | 47.2% |
| Coleman 54QT Steel Belt Cooler | 147g | JPY 625 | 47.8% |
The right-most column is what percent of the outer volume is space for things. Snow Peak, YETI and LOGOS's Slip Lid are 35 to 37%, with nearly two thirds of the box being walls. The thicker the walls, the longer it stays cold, and the more of the car's trunk it uses at the same capacity.
Solo, one night: my pick is the Daiwa Cool Line α3 GU 1500
A KEEP 41 is 1.7 days (41 ÷ 24). Under the harsh conditions of 40°C and 25% ice, it goes beyond the length of an overnight trip. Watch the inner width of 17cm. A tray of meat fills one row, and 2L plastic bottles do not stand in it.
Daiwa Cool Line α3 GU 1500
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 11,858 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 14,312 between shops. Prices change daily.
If you stretch to two nights in midsummer, Shimano's Fixel BS 17L. Its COOL 75 is 1.8 times the GU 1500 under the same conditions. In exchange it is 3.9kg and costs 1.47 times as much.
For lightness, LOGOS's Hyper Subzero Cooler L (about 1.5kg). But its listing is ice cream time, so it cannot be lined up with the two above. Choosing between lightness and margin works the same as in the 12 solo tents article.
Family of 4, one night: my pick is the Coleman Xtreme Cooler 52QT
Inexpensive and light. JPY 222 per liter is the lowest of the 12, and 94g per liter is the smallest of the 11 hard coolers. The inner height is 34cm, and the official page writes that 10 2L plastic bottles fit.
This part is a weak point. It has no wheels. With ten 2L bottles it is 20 + 4.6 = 24.6kg, a weight for two people to carry.
For people with a long way from the parking lot to the site, the Xtreme Wheeled Cooler 50QT (about 47L) has wheels and an extending handle. It is 1.7kg heavier than the 52QT and the price goes up by JPY 3,080.
Coleman Xtreme Wheeled Cooler 50QT
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 9,317 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 13,970 between shops. Prices change daily.
When loading the car, outer size matters first. Line up the packed sizes from the 10 two-room tents article against the 52QT's outer size of about 65 × 38 × 42cm and decide which way to set it in the trunk.
Two or more nights: my pick is the LOGOS Slip Lid 40
The maker gives the conditions of its own test in numbers: filled with ice at 26% of capacity and subzero packs at 10%, in a 25°C room, ice remained on day 7. At about 40L and about 4.2kg, it weighs about 40% of Snow Peak (11kg) or YETI (10.43kg).
Watch that the space for things comes to 25.6L, because it assumes 36% for ice and cold packs combined (40 × 0.36 = 14.4L). It is better to avoid putting water or ice directly in the box.
For the larger model with the same lid, there is the Slip Lid 55, and if you choose by vacuum insulation panels, the Captain Stag Super Cold Cooler Box.
LOGOS Hyper Subzero Cool Box Slip Lid 40
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 33,000 (as of 10/13). Prices vary by up to JPY 39,000 between shops. Prices change daily.
Reading the cold-keeping days: the same 30L box can be “90 hours” or “4.5 days”
Shimano's Fixel BS 30L is 30L, urethane foam, 5.3kg, and its cold-keeping listing is COOL 90 (90 ÷ 24 = 3.75 days). Shimano's ICEBOX ST 30L has the same capacity, material and weight, but its listing is “maximum ice retention 4.5 days” = 108 hours. Only the measuring differs, and 108 ÷ 90 = 1.2x.
| Listing | Temperature | Ice put in | What is counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimano COOL / Daiwa KEEP | 40℃ | Cube ice at 25% of capacity | Time until the ice reaches 0%, calculated from what remains after 8 hours |
| Shimano ICEBOX maximum ice retention | 9 hours at 30°C, 15 hours at 20°C | 40% of capacity | Time until the ice melts completely, calculated |
| LOGOS Slip Lid cold-keeping performance | 25℃ | 26% ice and 10% subzero packs | Days ice remains |
| Coleman (note in the December 2025 release) | 25±2℃ | An amount spread to suit the capacity | Until the inside, at about −12°C, goes above 10°C |
COOL and KEEP use the same conditions, so you can compare them side by side.
None of the listings are numbers for how many days you can leave food in. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries writes to put raw meat and raw fish in separate plastic bags. Chill well with cold packs, and keep the box in a cool place.
Who is it for?
It suits families of four staying one night. The capacity guide is 44 to 55L, and my pick is the Xtreme Cooler 52QT (about 49L). For two or more nights, the Hyper Subzero Cool Box Slip Lid 40 fits.
For a day trip, the Excursion Cooler 30QT (about 28L, cold-keeping about 2 days) is enough. If you already own a 44 to 55L, you can also add a soft cooler of around 20L. I put preparation for cold seasons in the CB and OD canister article.
FAQ
How many liters of cooler does a family of 4 need for one night?
44 to 55L. That is the size most families staying one night used, according to a Coleman survey.
Can I compare Shimano's COOL and Daiwa's KEEP side by side?
Yes. Both are hours measured under the same conditions: 40°C with ice at 25% of capacity. A KEEP 96 is 4 days (96 ÷ 24).
Do I need a vacuum panel cooler for camping?
Not for one night. For the Fixel 30L, the vacuum panel TD adds 25 hours of COOL for 1.6 times the price. It is a grade for people who camp two or more nights in midsummer.
